The Best Board Game Source

Hi,

I was somewhat disheartened to see that the lone subject under the board game section was about Monopoly. Although there's something to be said for the game — it sells vast numbers of copies worldwide — it's not a very good game. There are so many better ones out there.

To broaden your horizons, I'd recommend a visit to the BoardGameGeek (www.boardgamegeek.com). It's hands-down the best board game resource on the Internet. You will find pictures, descriptions, ratings, lists, session reports, reviews, rules translations, player aids, and lively discussions. And it's free. 

To get you started, I'm putting in a link for a session report about Amun Re. Amun Re is a Reiner Knizia auction, area control and property development game set in the Upper and Lower Kingdoms of ancient Egypt. Joe Gola, the author of this hysterical article, is one of a group of very talented writers who posts on "the Geek."  This particular session report captures the essence of gameplay while making you laugh at the same time.

OK June,
I've been wanting to play Amun-Re for a while now, but after reading that I have to, Because I now need to know how the game fits around that story. Do you relay get to TP some ones pyramid, or steal there offerings?

I totally concur that the Geek is the place to be, but OMG, that session report is hysterical!

Stealing offerings is in the rules.  TPing pyramids, not so much.  But the game DOES fit the story, which is what makes it even funnier.

Sorry Tiny, there's no TPing the pyramids or crapping in the weaving huts, but Joe shows how you bid for territories and then improve them by employing farmers and puilding pyramids on them. You have to sacrifice gold to Amun Re to make farms productive and pay more. If you manage your money poorly, you get stuck with lousy properties later in the game.

That has to be the funniest thing I've ever read though. The day it first got posted to the Geek, I was laughing so hard that I was crying. My co-workers thought I had finally lost it.

Cool site. The main reason why I posted about Monopoly is that everyone knows about it, and I didn't want the board to be all empty and such. I think it's an okay game, cause it can be intergrated into anything.

One of my faves is when we refer to Die Sieben Siegel (The Seven Seals) as Die Stephen Seagal. It's a great trick-taking game.

Isn't it fun sometimes how Americans murder the French and German languages?
