Hey, all;

Is there a way to set up so that if I have a Private Message pending, that I could get some sort of notification when I log in? As it is, I have to scroll down to the bottom of my Forum screen and squint at the status read-outs. Something like a hyperlink under the Forum Controls that says "you have Private Messages waiting" would be *extremely* useful to me.

Apologies if this is already available and I'm just not configured right. If so, could someone hand me a clue?

Thanks. :-)

Adam,

Go to "Profile", and from the side, choose "Personal Message Options".

Hm. I have "notify by e-mail" selected - has been, apparantly - but I'm not getting notified by e-mail.

It works fine for me - I'll have to see if I can track it for you.

Do you have a spam filter set up. If you do it could be sending all the notifications to a spam folder.

Personal message notifcations have always gotten through to me, but then I've only had 4 personal messages.

Other notifications have been hit or miss for me since the beginning.  I still get less than half the notifications for topics I've either related or responded/subscribed to, so I've just been using the All Unread Posts function for the last few months.  Here's the link if you want to try that:
http://www.dexposure2.com/forum//index.php?action=unread;all

I've even made it a button on my Links bar in IE Smiley

I've checked my spam-filter (using the Bayesian filter built into Thunderbird - there's nothing in the catch-all). Far as I can tell... if the Forum is sending me notifications, then I'm just not getting them.

I use Outlook Express.  But the forum couldn't know what software is on the receiving end when it sends an email, could it?

Could it be that the forum software has different notifcation problems for different people?  Randomly refusing to tell you about PMs and telling me *only* of PMs and topics in which I have no interest?  :-)

Well, without knowing which SMTP protocol the Forums use, and how Vinny's MX handlers work, I can't even guess. But - in my previous works at ISPs and web-hosts... I've seen some very weird crap, and nothing in the IT realm surprises me anymore.

All's I know is that I'm on Verizon DSL, I run Thunderbird with the Junk Mail extension, secured by Avast! Anti-Virus and Kerio Personal Firewall behind a Netgear RT-314 router... and I'm not getting notifications from the Forum. I don't know if they're just not being sent, or being sent and lost somewhere... but my rig detects all incoming port-traffic and logs it - and the logs say that they haven't receieved any e-mail from the Forums.

Two possibilities present themselves:

1. The Forum just isn't sending me mail.
2. The Forum is sending, but something between me and the Forum's mail-exchanger is blocking the traffic.

Basically... as far as my tech can tell... I'm just not getting sent any e-mail.

So you're not getting regular topic and reply notifications either?

I know I don't get regular topic replies or message notifications. Some days it works, some days it doesn't, and it appears to be totally random. Many times I'll get the notifications several days delayed.

Nope. I'm getting zilch. Nada. Zippo, and I don't mean the lighter.

Still having this issue - I've done everything this thread suggests, but still no notifications of anything whatsoever are coming in.

Do you have the email (supposedly being) sent to a mail server system on your own firewall or do you have it going to an outside source such as a webmail (hotmail, gmail, isp-based, etc.)?  If it won't go to a webmail, which would have nothing to do with your own setup, then the problem's source is in how the forum software handles the email requests.

In my own php applications that send email notifications, it uses our company's exchange server via standard STMP protocols.  The problem could be the mail server that is being used.

Just closing out this "trouble ticket". Right after Vinny switched everything over to the new ISP, I started getting notifications.

::shrug:: As Surak famously put it, "it is illogical to argue with success". Smiley
