Magic The Gathering and Other Wizards Events
« on: August 14, 2005, 08:39:48 PM »

Since I have been running Magic for DE for the past year it has been very seldom that we get to sanction the events due to the lack of people attending for the events. For those of you whom play I would like some help extending the word and maybe we can run better events... Right now our events are 16K value, we can up that to 24k and get a level 3 judge... BUT! it would take a min. of 16 players per event to do that. If anyone has ideas please speak them.

This also goes for D&D and SW minis... anything we can do to get the word out the better the games will be.

The problem I always ran into, is no matter what weekend we run our cons, there's always a Grey Matter event running SOMEWHERE in the state of NJ.  Even when I tried to work with them ahead of time, to make sure our dates didn't conflict, they'd assure me they wouldn't schedule on our weekend, but lo and behold, they did anyway.  They know they have a stranglehold on NJ, so they don't care when they schedule opposite anyone.  It's really annoying.

Ok Guys the answer is not a great one but it is the best I have to offer now, and it is what we are doing with the whole con.

GRASS ROOTS, we give the players what there looking for and the little extra that DE gives so well and each and every player will bring frends with then the next time they come to one of are shows.

What we need to do now is SCREAM it from the roof tops, "Yo, we have what your looking for, and more that you didn't know you wanted!!"

they will come, and they will bring more people with them.

As was said in Wayne's World "book them and they will come"

now I ask you, where would you go , on the web or in your area to tell the most people about our cons at one time, Next I'll ask you to do IT.  And yes Drew this can only be good for all of us in the long run, with the way we are doing cross promotions.

The actual problem doesn't have to deal with the players or even Grey Matter... DCI is set on specific date to run Pro Tour Qualifiers, Grand Prix Trials, Pro Tours and Grand Prix. These dates are set by DCI... Which I'm sorry to say doesn't disclose the events till they are good and ready. I have tried to talk to a few people that I am close with from DCI and even they said that it's not possible once the event is set for the dates to be changed/moved. Everyting is based on specific time frames. Even Betacon is getting screwed by a Grand Prix in Philly... We have a decent following as Gamers Dream but will that be enough to support CCG's at other cons as well?

How long before official DCI events are the dates announced?  There HAS to be a way to get advanced notice of dates so we can schedule our events with the least possible resistance.  I'm gonna give Linda a call and see what I can dig up.

Here is the issue... They have 3 locations to do the major events in... figure 1 in each location per month... Philly, NJ, and NY... That leaves one weekend to deal with... thats figuring there is no major event going on somewhere else... With the fact we have no Level 3 judge that is willing to come to the convention... It's hard to draw a crowd.... I think our first move shouldn't be to talk to Linda since she has no say in when or where the events are being held... But to see if Gray Matter has anything posted and how far in advance we can get from them to give us an idea....

While she might not have a say in when the events happen, I've known her a long time and I might be able to find out the dates.  That's what I was suggesting. :)  Not get her to change anything.

For what it's worth for all you DCI fans I have been working on things with Grey Matter and it's to the point where we are gonna be able to gain the services of one of their judges... This may not start till Lunacon in March but it will be a large step in the right direction. Lets hope things get better... I'd hate to see CCG's die out at DE cons...
