Hey Folks,
Why is there a DCI fee to play in the Magic the Gathering events? Also, I don't like sealed deck events since I have to buy in. The cost to enter your conventions is already high enough for what's offered and what's comparable to other cons. Can't you have a couple of free Magic events at your cons? Heck the prize doesn't have to be great. I'd be happy with Double Exposure prize points.
Hi. I'm going to take exception to the idea that our registration fee is higher than "what is offered at other cons".
Origins is $50 for its 4 days, same as ours. However, they charge PER GAME for everything you play. If you are an avid gamer who wants to play in 12 games through the event (this is conservative for some), you are looking at an additional $24.00 as long as you don't play in any of the "premium" events.
GEN CON is $65 for its 4 days, PLUS events, just like Origins.
Find any other area 4-day convention, much less a 5-day convention for under $50. If you're going to compare us to 3-day conventions, please note that we have a $40.00 weekend-only badge, introduced this year for the first time.
NOW, find ANY gaming convention in the WORLD that offers a full-blown Con Suite with all the soda you can drink and all the snacks you can eat throughout the convention.
We have discovered through the years that the vast majority of Magic players do not want to play in a tournament that is not DCI sanctioned, and the only way to do a DCI sanctioned tournament is to charge the DCI fee, which gets paid directly to WOTC. As for sealed deck tournaments, remember you get to KEEP the cards you've bought - the cost is basically the same as buying new cards.
If you want to just play Magic for fun, by all means, find a partner, sit down and play. But please don't blame us for the damage that WOTC has done to our beloved industry over the last decade.
