Dreamation 2007
« on: October 22, 2006, 09:33:49 PM »

Greetings Minna-san!

I'm getting an early jump on starting this topic. I have a couple of ideas for programming themes as well as some new titles that have yet to make the jump across the Pacific.

First off, New Titles...

"Black Lagoon" An awesome action series about modern-day South China Seas pirates. Pretty intense violence so definitely an 'after 10pm' show.

"Tide Line Blue" A futuristic war/adventure drama set in a world with a distinct lack of polar ice caps. (Sorry, George...no Kyoto Treaty cookie for you!) Directed and animated by a group of artists who trained under Hayao Miyazaki and, damn does it show!

"Beating-to-Death Angel Dokuro-chan" A hyper-violent comedy about an angel from the future sent to kill a high-school student who will one day have a drastic affect on the world. And she does it...repeatedly! Over and over in fact, in increasingly gory ways! I'd been planning on showing this for a while and seeing the *ahem* reaction it got at Southern Exposure I'm going to be sure to show it at Dreamation.

Secondly, more theme-oriented programming ideas...

I've been batting around the idea of doing a whole day of programming based on a particular theme and I wanted input from any interested parties. For example, an easy theme would be a D&D day (it IS a gaming con, after all). Shows like Lodoss Wars, Rune Soldier, Ruin Explorers, even the old Dungeons & Dragons cartoon for the "Saturday Morning Revival" block. A personal favorite theme of mine is espionage and there are plenty of shows with good spycraft.

So if anyone has an idea for a theme or shows to a particular theme, let me know and I'll see if I can procure it.

Till then, be seeing y'all...

Hmmm...so how ugly do you wanna get with this?  I've got a few weird requests for the Old School/Saturdya Morning block...if you feel up to finding them.

Mai-Otome / Mai-Otome Zwei?

Yes, I know Zwei won't be finished till the end of 2007, but ep2 should be released by Dreamation.

It's only 4 episodes, Sunshine needs to get off their collective butts and finish it!

Mai-Otome / Mai-Otome Zwei?

I'd like to finish showing Mai-HiME before jumping into any sequels, especially considering how Otome Zwei starts off. Everyone watching it would be COMPLETELY lost.

At the rate it's being released we should be done showing Mai-HiME by Dexcon. If we can finish it at Dexcon I could put the first batch of Otome episodes on the same show's schedule.

True enough.

I didn't know how much of Hime you've shown.

Did the Mai-HiME Omake make it onto the DVD's?

Greetings Minna-san!

Here's the finished schedule for Dreamation 2007 with all the usual "schedule is subject to change due to blah blah blah" disclaimers.

Saturday night is "Fantasy Fest". This is my first time doing a whole theme-day-thingie so I want to get all the input for further 'fests, whether it be "More of the same", "Here's a cool genre to consider" or "iT r teH SUXXORS!!!11" No opinion or feedback is beneath my ability to callously ignore.  ;D

I haven't forgotten the other standards I've been using in years past. Nostalgia @ Noon, Saturday Morning Cartoon Revival and the late-night Viewer's Choice is still an integral part of the programming.

Don't forget, if you want a copy of "This is Otakudom" bring a blank DVD. Last I checked, Ted says he can zap copies at the con for anyone interested. Just remember the one overriding rule, no copies for rent or sale. Any such breach will force me to cease any chance of me making any more for anyone, no exceptions.

Well, I hope you enjoy this year's submission. And without further ado...

THURSDAY

6PM - 8PM - "Azumanga Daioh": Japanese high school life is thrown into sharp relief in this "slice of life" comedy revolving around six unique students and their weirdo teachers.

8PM - 10PM - "Ghost Stories": What happens when a mediocre anime is dropped into the laps of a pack of American voice actors with a gift for wicked improvisation? A hilariously twisted show in the tradition of "What's Up Tiger Lily?"

10PM - 12AM - "Monster": Kenzou Tenma, a gifted surgeon, has seen many ups and downs in life. His rising career and high-profile fiancee seemed secure until a morally correct decision left him the victim of hospital politics. Later a series of bizarre murders have put him at the top of the hospital staff, and the list of suspects. Now Dr. Tenma must clear his name and find out if the killing spree is connected to the boy who's life he saved on that fateful day.

12AM - 2:30AM - "The Brotherhood of the Wolf - Extended European Cut": (Live Action) Set in pre-Revolution France and based loosely on historical events, this movie combines accurate period-piece production values with Hong Kong-style action beats. A murderous beast is terrorizing the province of Gevaudan, randomly savaging the local peasants. The Chevalier du Fronsac and his Iroquois blood brother Mani travel to the beleaguered region to catch the beast. But what they find transcends the creature and unearths a pit of political intrigue that spans the face of Europe.

2:30AM - Viewer's Choice

FRIDAY

12PM - 2PM - Nostalgia @ Noon "Transformers: The Movie": Possibly the most remarkable chapter in the struggle between the Autobots and the Decepticons. As the Great Cybertronian War reaches it's darkest hour an even greater threat looms over all...Unicron, the mechanized planet that consumes any world in it's path.

2PM - 4PM - "Shinkon Gattai Godannar": It's pretty harsh to be the bride left at the altar during her wedding. But isn't an attack by giant monsters a valid reason when the groom is a robot pilot? But wait, there's more! What if he met the bride in the process of rescuing her five years ago from the same monstrous threat? And what if you add in the loss of his previous fiancee during that rescue? Believe it or not, you get a hilarious, fan-service-ridden giant robot saga that strains the limits of marital responsibility...if they finally ever tie the knot, that is!

4PM - 6PM - "Area 88": Shin Kazama had it all...a top-rated pilot, a promising job with Yamato Airlines on the horizon and his upcoming wedding to the boss' daughter. That is, until his best friend secretly signed him up as an air mercenary in a Middle Eastern civil war. Now Shin must fight with all his skill to earn enough money to buy back his freedom. You see, once you're signed into service at Area 88 there are only three ways to leave...serve three years, pay a $1.5 million penalty or die trying.

6PM - 8PM - "Mai-HiME": Didn't you wish you had superpowers when you were in high school? Sure you did! But what if that power came with a terrible price? Tokiha Mai and her sickly brother may have to face this question as they transfer to Fuuka Academy. Secrets, intrigue and a frightful struggle take place behind the scenes of the prestigious school.

8PM - 10PM - "Ergo Proxy": In the domed city of Romdeau humans and robots, referred to as Auto-Raves, live in utopian harmony. This delicate social balance is jeopardized by a series of murders and the outbreak of the Cogito Virus which grants androids self-awareness and a capacity for violent self-defense. Re-l Mayer, an inspector in the Citizens Intelligence Bureau tasked to investigate these disruptions, finds herself in an ever-deepening mystery when she stumbles upon a secret government project involving a humanoid called "Proxy".

10PM - 11PM - "This Is Otakudom - The Special Edition": The first fan parody from NoNDE Films, the creators of S.T.E.A.M. Take a peek into the sordid lives and desperate hours of a group of otaku as they set forth to (and struggle to survive) the end-all-be-all Nadir of east coast anime fandom, Otakon.

11PM - 2AM - "Black Lagoon": Okajima Rokuro was a completely average Japanese salaryman. That is, until he's sent to the asian South Seas on extremely sensitive business. Now he finds himself kidnapped, ransomed, shot at, declared dead and hunted by mercenaries, all thanks to the crew of the pirate vessel Black Lagoon. With nothing else left to lose and danger all around Rokuro embraces the fate thrust upon him and does the unthinkable, join the crew and finally start living his life to the fullest.

2AM - Viewer's Choice

SATURDAY "Fantasy Fest"

10AM - 12PM - Saturday Morning Cartoon Revival "Dungeons & Dragons": Airing on CBS from 1983 to 1985 and now enjoying it's official DVD release. This classic 'toon follows the adventures of six ordinary kids who are transported to a realm of mystic forces and evil foes. Gifted with magic items of considerable power, they are pursued by the archfiend Venger as they try to find their way home.

12PM - 2PM - Nostalgia @ Noon "The Last Unicorn": Based on the novel by Peter S. Beagle. Unicorns have disappeared from the world, all save one. Following only faint clues, the last unicorn sets off to find the fate of her kind with the help of an incompetent wizard and a middle-aged scullery maid.

2PM - 4PM - "Magic Knights Rayearth": The magical world of Cephiro is in danger. Princess Emeraude, the source of peace and balance, has been imprisoned, leaving the world at the mercy of invading monsters. With her last ounce of strength she summons a trio of junior high school girls from our world. Will they embrace their destiny to become the legendary Magic Knights and save Cephiro?

4PM - 6PM - "Record of the Lodoss Wars": On the eve of the unification of Lodoss creatures start running rampant, dragons awaken, the neighboring island of Marmo invades, the Grey Witch plots and the God of Destruction lurks in wait.  Adventure and peril are in no short supply for Parn, Deedlit and their companions as they band together to meet these threats to their homeland.

6PM - 7PM - "Armored Dragon Legend Villgust": In the land of Villgust, dark forces are on the rise. The goddess Windina has selected and blessed eight heroes to fight the threat. Now if only she'd sent them a memo to this effect.

7PM - 9PM - "Scrapped Princess": Life can be tough when you're a teenager. But what if the powers-that-be have proclaimed you to be the long-dreaded Scrapped Princess who, when she turns sixteen, will become "the poison that will destroy the world". Enter Pacifica Casull, an almost-sixteen-year-old who has been living on the move most of her life, little knowing what destiny has in store for her.

9PM - 11PM - "Rune Soldier": You got your Warrior in my Mage! You got your Mage in my Warrior!! Louie, the Rune Soldier, is one confused student, preferring to beat his foes senseless instead of hitting the books. Hilarity ensues!

11PM - 12AM - "Slayers: The Motion Picture": Enveloped in mists, the island of Mipross has been shrouded in mystery since the dawn of time! Now, two mighty sorceresses will attempt to pierce the veil of secrecy and silence that has hidden the horrible truth about Mipross from the eyes of men for hundreds of years! Join the short-statured and shorter tempered mage Lina Inverse and her over-endowed associate Naga as they challenge the greatest mystery of the land.

12AM - 1AM - "Dragon Half": Mink should be a normal, everyday girl. She likes hanging out with her friends and listening to her favorite pop singer. Only her parents have insured that life will always be, ahem...interesting. But what do you expect when your father is a retired swordsman with a bounty on his head and your mother is the red dragon he was sent to slay? A perfect show for those who love to see the fantasy genre turned on it's ear!

1AM - Viewer's Choice

SUNDAY

10AM - 12PM - "Princess Tutu": A story of music, magic and destiny in the tradition of classic fairy tales. Once upon a time a duck fell in love with a prince. But such a love would surely be unrequited, until a strange man gifts the duck with a pendant that turns her into a girl named Ahiru (which translates to 'duck'). At the prestigious performing arts academy attended by her prince Ahiru must overcome her inherent clumsiness to win his affection. But, more importantly, she must decide whether to accept her destiny or to defy it.

12PM - 1PM - Nostalgia @ Noon "Prefectural Earth Defense Force": A cosmically silly sci-fi farce! The Telephone Pole Gang (no, really!) is bent on conquering the world. However, so they don't stretch themselves too thin, they've decided to focus their efforts on one particular prefecture in Japan first. Watch as a trio of high-school students (of course) are tapped to defend their home from this...um, menace, we guess. did we mention the guy who was "accidentally" turned into a one million horsepower cyborg?

1PM - 3PM - "Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam III - Love is the Pulse of the Stars": The last of the updated movie versions of one of the greatest space opera/giant robot series. Years after the near-apocalyptic One Year War, the Titans have been charged by Earth's government to root out seeds of dissent throughout the solar system with an iron fist. Camille Vidan, a young, ace robot pilot, experiences their tyranny first-hand. His loss spurs him to take up arms with the growing rebel forces and their fight for freedom.

3PM - Dead Dog Anime - For those who have the Constitution Stats to see it through to the very end! Potluck, random and no-holds-barred! If you want to see it and we have it, SO SHALL IT BE!!
