A small moment for a comic genius...
« on: May 28, 2008, 09:47:22 AM »

So Saturday, Dick Martin died. :'(

I know most of us here are probably not old enough to remember him for his best known work on Laugh-In.  And only some of us will have seen his work directing episodes of Newhart, and Family Ties.  But you can bet your sweet bippy, that all your modern zany comedy owes at least something to him.  Thanks Dick Martin, you made things "very intereshting".

PS: I highly reccommend you all go find some of Laugh-In to go watch, before you can only look it up in your Funk and Wagnall's   ;D

"Say 'good-night,' Dick." "Good night, Dick." "Good night, everybody."

"Rowan and Martins Laugh in" was one of my fathers favorites, so I almost grew up on it.
If I remember correctly tho, much of the comedy on the show has to be taken in the context of the times. (but hey, its a lot of years ago, so I might be mixing it with something else)

You're right.  Topically, a lot of it was temporally contextual.  Btu there were formats to the skits involved in it that got carried forward, modifed, and reused.  Also many of the catchphrases have worked their way into slang and common usage.
