Hopscotch in Sanctuary
« on: September 15, 2005, 12:49:28 PM »

A 10 year old girl stands in one of the aisles of Sanctuary, chalk dust on her hands. Her blue dress is spotted with white and blue streaks from the colored dust. Looking down in satisfaction, the little girl smiles at the hopscotch board drawn on the floor with elaborate celtic knotwork scrolling around it, hoping her new friends would appreciate her hard work.

Humming to herself a short mathematical progression, a melody that the angels taught her, she tosses a small shiny stone up and down, her hazel eyes and red hair reflecting in the mirror-like surface.

“Come out and play…please?” A few minutes go past and she becomes a very frustrated little girl. Stomping her feet and using an outside voice, “Come out and play….NOW PLEASE!”

The sound echoes throughout the cathedral and the little girl realizes how much noise she has made. Scrunching down and whispering “sorry!” she tiptoes to the center knotwork where she sits down quietly and tosses the shiny stone up and down waiting for someone to play with, giggling every so often.

A small girl sized wraith pops her head in at the ruckus.  She goes up to the Girl in Blue, and looks down, and then back up.

"Ya know, yellin' like dat, dosen' get much in here.  We were jus' watchin you draw. Didden want to intarupt an artist.   She makes stuff like dat, but not for playin'.  How's it work?", the wraithlette inquires.

Pursing her lips in concentration, the little girl almost drops the stone at the voice of the little wraith.
“Shhhhhhhh…I have to be quiet. They are talking out there” pointing towards the garden, I have to stay out of trouble but I am sooooo bored!”

At the long soooo the little girl rocks back and lays out spreadeagle on the central knotwork, making a snow angel in her imagination.

“Hmm you have never played hopscotch? EVER? Com’er and watch me do it, first without the stone.”

The little girl astounded at the wraithlette’s comment. Running back to the beginning of the board the little girl mimics tossing the stone, hopping the course and returning all the while whistling a song.

I'm bringing home my baby bumble bee
Won't my mommy be so proud of me
I'm bringing home my baby bumble bee
Ooh eee it stung me!
I'm squishing up my baby bumble bee
Won't my mommy be so proud of me
I'm squishing up my baby bumble bee
Ooh ee it's all over me!

“Now with the stone!” Tossing the shiny pebble to the first block the little girl hops to the end, turns around gracefully and returns picking up the stone as she passes by the block.

“Here you wanna try?”

The wraithlette shrugs her "shoulders", and tosses the stone.  She begins singing as she "hops".

Lil Bunny Foo Foo,
Hoppin through da forest
Scooping up da field mice
And boppin' 'em on da head

Down came the good fairwy an' she said

"Lil' Bunny Foo Foo,
I doan wanna see you
Scooping up da field mice
And boppin' 'em on da head.
I'll give you tree chances,
And if you doan beehave
I'll turn you intah a goon!"

For a first timer The Wraithlete does relatively well, and snags the stone on her way out.

"Your turn miss?"

Clenching her fists and muttering under her breath ~so what first time…bid deal~

Smiling sweetly and tossing the stone to the second space, she continues on hopping down to the end

Humming tunes that she remembered from another time;

Goosey Goosey Gander where shall I wander,
Upstairs, downstairs and in my lady's chamber
There I met an old man who wouldn't say his prayers,
I took him by the left leg and threw him down the stairs.
Stopping at the top of the hopscotch, the little girl pirouetted and then proceeded back, scooping up the stone and ending in a heap as she collapsed in giggles.

“your turn!”

The Wraithlette tosses the stone into the second square and begins her trek.  Feeling more confident she taps into her natural abilities, and moves with the grace of a gymnast.  Singing all the way, she recites:

"How many miles to Babylon?
Tree score an' ten.
Can I get t'ere by candlelight?
Aye, and back again.
If your feet are nimble and light,
You'll get t'ere by candlelight."

She throws a very fluid move to snag the stone.  Moving like a body of shadowy water, she cartwheels forward on one hand, which lands on the stone, grabbing it as she turns end over end, to land in the first square.  Hopping out for the finish, she opens her palm to offer the stone.

"Never said we had ta' just use feet.  Your turn miss."

"Never said we had ta' just use feet.  Your turn miss."

Feeling her face burn up with anger at the little wraith, she pouted a pretty little pout for a few seconds, thought a couple more, took a deep breath and took the stone from the little hand.

"But the rules say to use your hands only to pick up the stone. if I can't use my hands you can't that's the rules." Silence encompasses the hall for a few seconds and then there is the sound of the stone skittering across the floor to land in the third box.  "But I didn't tell you the rules, did I?"

Muttering to herself in arcane language the little girl bounds forward, slowly moving from square to square, not graceful just a smooth fluid solid jump each time. Deciding just to play not to compete, she continues up the board.

Stopping at the top balancing on one tiptoe, her face puckered in concentration. "That's ok I will teach you other games. What games do you play?

Continuing on down the board humming another tune she stopped and gracefully picked up the stone just as a proper young lady would.

When the wind is in the east,
'Tis neither good for man nor beast;
When the wind is in the north,
The skilful Asher goes not forth;
When the wind is in the south,
It blows the bait in the fishes' mouth;
When the wind is in the west,
Then 'tis at the very best.

Finishing up at the bottom, the little girl tossed the stone to the little wraith, "Do you have a treehouse, or a pony, or toys?"

Sitting down on the pew to watch the wraith take it's turn, the girl absentmindedly rubbed her left elbow, "Do they have cookies here?"

Digging into a small pocket the little girl pulls out a silver cord tied in a circle and proceeds to start a cat's cradle with her hands.

"Do you know this game? There are soooo many ways to play it"

The little girl thought for a moment, "Rules are there to help you, but sometimes rules can be broken. But you gotta have a good reason!"

Whispering to the little wraith, "And you can't blame Kaiburr either!"

Looking over at the elaborate knotwork that was smugged after their play. "I think we should clean it up before someone gets mad at us.

Where do we find stuff to clean the floor and where do we find cookies now, I'm hungry."

"Floor cleans itself, watch!"
The chalk drawings melt away before the girl in blue's eyes, and the floor is as new.
"Tank you floor!", the wraithlette calls out.  "You want cookies, follow me.  They're in da kitchen."
The wraithlette motions for the girl in blue to follow her into the kitchen.

"That is so neat! How did the floor, I mean,” tiptoeing on the floor avoiding the spot that was cleaned the little girl follows the wraithlette, “sorry for walking on you Mr. floor.”

Stopping before entering the kitchen, the little girl whispers to her friend, “Can you teach me how to do that…the little girl’s hazel eyes twinkle, “I can teach you my kind of magic but you can’t tell anyone, it’s a secret.”

“By the way, where is everyone else? I mean there has to be more kids around here, or are you the only one. I’m an only one too.”

Scrunching up her face in concentration, “I gotta a pet….you want to meet him?”

The wraithlette giggles at the notion of apologizing to the floor.  "Doan worry about walkin on da floor.  It's good for its back.  Also its not my magic.  Alla Sanctooary does it.  'Self-cleaning', Da Espa calls it.  'Vewy conveenent', he says.
I'm da only kid I met.  But is a big place.  And..oh..oh...oh...Mama just had her babies!  So dere'll be more kids soon!  And Miss Bit, she use'ta be liddle, well she's like a big kid.  Though she's kinda sad righ' now.  Icky Virus dumped her.  We should go visit dem.  Mebbe cheer Miss Bit up.  Espa's worwied about her.  Can't have a worwied Espa.  No good at all.
Mebbe we can bwing Miss Bit, Mama, and the babies some cookies.  Afta we get some first of course."

“But you met me so we have two of us now, which is very good” The little girl wondered how to hug the wraithlette but held back her urge to do so.

“Babies? I used to babysit awhile ago. I can sing songs I know LOTS of songs!” The little girl pirouetted again in happiness at the thought of being useful.

The little girl’s stance changed at the mention of someone being dumped. Her eyes flashed deep red at the thought of someone being sad. Nodding her head in agreement with the shade, “Who is this Virus? And should we kick ‘em in the shins for being bad. Dumping people out the window is very bad, specially if there is a long drop!” Thinking for a brief moment, “Mebee we can get Kaiburr to toss this Virus out the window too! Waddya think?”

At the word cookies, all other thoughts stop for a brief 10 year old moment, “Do they have cinnamon raisin oatmeal, chocolate chip, macademia nut, coconut, mushy date cookies?”

Agreeing with the little wraithlette, “We can bring cookies and milk to Miss Bit.” Whispering to the little wraith, “Have I met her yet? Where is she? And where are the babies?”

“I can bake too  ya know, but it is good to have Kaiburr around. He eats the burnt ones.”
