Dreamation 2009
« on: December 04, 2008, 11:11:47 PM »

Greetings and Salutations!

I've decided to get a quicker jump on programming the next Anime/Video Room schedule, bolstered by the fact that I've had some programming choices in mind for months AND I just happened to think about it RIGHT NOW. As always, I'm open to anyone who gives a damn visits the room to proffer up suggestions as I'm always looking for input and outside opinions.

Continuing with our tradition of theme-based-lineups, the Saturday theme du con will be "Life In The Fast Lane" (inspired by the Eagles song of the same name - if you don't know it, find it - izz a kick-ass song!). Not just in the literal "driving really fast" sense but in the broader sense of living life on the Proverbial Edge/living dangerously and all that it entails. Think in terms of shows that star characters with little or no superpowers, no giant robots, etc, but still willingly throw themselves into very dangerous lifestyles. Later at night (when the con-kiddies aren't around) the schedule will take on a distinctively more "Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll" flavor.

For example, on the "Living Dangerously" front could be shows like...
Burst Angel
Cowboy BeBop
The Dirty Pair original TV series
(Nostalgia@Noon fodder)
eX Driver
Gunsmith Cats

Later at night would be titles as colorful as...
BubbleGum Crisis (plenty o' rock & roll there, right Buddha?)  ;)
Rock & Rule (what can I say? I always look for an excuse to show this rare gem)
Heavy Metal (guess what, no one in the room under 17 years old - keep your ID handy)
Akira (it is, after all, it's 20th Anniversary - we haven't shown it in a dog's life...plus it would sound AWESOME on the speakers we get for the room!)

I must say, I'm a little stuck for an appropriate Saturday Morning Cartoon Revival title and am looking for suggestions. If nothing else I have the new "Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers" box sets (just delivered...yay!!). Then again, "Robotech" might be appropriate. After all, the SDF-1 launching and Zentraedi invasion of our solar system did take place in 2009.

There are other, newer shows I'd like to inflict share with everyone outside the Saturday Theme-Day. "Soul Eater", "Heroic Age" and other recent imports. There's no shortage of great cutting-edge material out there.

Other shows we'll more than likely show again would include "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" and "The Mysterious Cities of Gold" (which was a big hit with the con-kiddies).

Comments? Questions? Suggestions? Death Threats? Just put teh intarwebs to good use here.
Till then, be seeing you...

I think somebody is "Living Dangerously" suggesting that to Brian

I'd also suggest Soul Eater, but certain members of the Double Exposure organization [You know who you are ;)] would most likely come after me with pitchforks and torches strongly object

How about a double play with Riding Bean and Gunsmith Cats. I never saw GC in it's entirety before and can't find a copy I don't think is bootleg.

I mentioned "Soul Eater" in the first post of this thread. I'm very keen on showing it, but I would probably save that for later on Friday night, what with all the ghoulish imageries and such (not to mention Blair's incapability of showing up in an episode with clothes on!).

For the first half of the day I am specifically looking to showcase shows where the main characters make do without superpowers, giant robots, powered armor or supernatural gifts. Just good ol' wits, skills and talent.

Here's a tentative line-up for Saturday, based on feedback and such...

Saturday Morning Cartoon Revival: "Undisclosed Series"
(only Buddha and I know what's in store. And don't ask either of us. Izz a secret!  ;))
Nostalgia @ Noon: The Dirty Pair: Original TV series
eX Driver
(OAV series or the movie...not sure yet)
Burst Angel
Riding Bean & Gunsmith Cats
(a Kenichi Sonoda Double-Shot! Can you dig it?!)
Rock & Rule
Heavy Metal

I may/may not include "Akira" in this mix. I might schedule it for Friday evening instead. I'll post the finished schedule for the entire weekend here by the end of January, at the latest.

There's still room for a little more material, maybe an hour or so. And don't forget, there's always the "Viewer's Choice" portion after the official programming has concluded. So keep the suggestions coming. Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated. Many thanks to all of you.

Here it is folks! Enjoy!

THURSDAY

6PM – 8PM – "Brigadoon: Marin & Melan": In Japan circa 1969 Marin Asagi is a typical junior high student. Typical, that is, except for being an orphan who is as imaginative as she is poor. But this does nothing to hurt her sunny disposition, not even when an entire mirage–like world appears in the skies across the world and alien creatures appear with the intent to end the poor girl. But as she races for her life she stumbles across an artifact in the local shrine. Sealed within is a mechanoid alien protector, Melan Blue. Can Marin and Melan save the world while still dealing with school bullies, one family crisis after another and the police?

8PM – 10PM – "Irresponsible Captain Tylor": How can a shiftless slacker end up as a starship captain during a time of war? Just ask Commander Justy Ueki Tylor, a man seemingly blessed with the Devil's luck. But can it hold out when the Raalgon Empire turns it's eyes squarely on him? But they may have to wait in line as the military high-command AND his own crew are looking for a piece of him...preferably his head!

10PM – 11PM – "Neo Tokyo": A trio of short films by some of Japan's finest animators based on the works of sci-fi novelist Taku Mayumura. "Labyrinth Labyrinthos" by Rin Taro (Galaxy Express, X:1999), "Running Man" by Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Wicked City, Ninja Scroll) and "The Order To Stop Construction" by Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira, Steamboy) fill out this artistic animated triptych.

12AM – Viewer's Choice

FRIDAY

12PM – 2PM – Nostalgia @ Noon "The Mysterious Cities of Gold": Set in 1532 during the Spanish Age of Conquest. Esteban, rumored to be the "Child of the Sun" embarks upon a quest to find his long lost father in the New World with the help of Zia, a kidnapped Incan girl, and Tao, the last survivor of highly advanced civilization. The key to their goal is the first Lost City of Gold, but as they get closer they find themselves embroiled deeper in the plots of gold–hungry conquistadors and even greater mysteries.

2PM – 4PM – "Tide Line Blue": It's been fourteen years since "The Hammer of Eden" fell to Earth claiming six billion lives and catastrophically raising the oceans. Now war threatens to destroy the fragile alliance of island nations, war brought by a soldier who once was humanity's hope for salvation. And through it all Keel, a young trickster, must face his own past and an uncertain future to protect the girl he loves and her newborn infant.

4PM – 6PM – "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya": There are worse fates than to be drafted into the newly–formed club by Haruhi Suzumiya, the high school's most energetic and notoriously fickle student. It might be getting "voluntarily arrested" to be a member of her SOS Brigade, or finding yourself surrounded by espers and time travelers. But could it be so bad that the fate of the entire universe depends on Haruhi not getting too dissatisfied with everything that she subconsciously destroys it and replaces it with a less–boring one?

6PM – 8PM – "Paprika": The newest film by Satoshi Kon, director of "Perfect Blue", "Millennium Actress", "Tokyo Godfathers" and "Paranoia Agent". The DC–Mini is the newest device in dream therapy, allowing Dream Detective Paprika to enter into and interact with the dreams of her patients. But before the device can be unveiled to the public, a prototype is stolen and one of its developers is mentally assulted. Doctors Atsuko Chiba and Tosaku Tokita, members of the DC–Mini research team, must get it back to stop the attacker running rampant through people's psyches. However, the danger is not just to their sanity, but the very boundary between our waking–world and our dreams.

8PM – 10PM – "Appleseed Ex Machina": Deunan Knute, and her cyborg partner/lover Briareos, are part of the ESWAT, the futuristic city of Olympus' crack team of special forces commandos. Now their partnership is really being tested when, Tereus, an experimental bioroid with a unique past, is added to the team.

10PM – 12AM – "Akira – 20th Anniversary": In the summer of 1988, the animation world was rocked to it's very foundations with the premier of Katsuhiro Otomo's groundbreaking dystopian masterpiece...AKIRA! Psychics and cyberpunk rock the very foundations of Neo Tokyo as a secret military project to produce espers clash with street gangs and a rioting populace.

12AM – 2AM – "Soul Eater": Technical school can be a bit of a drag. But what if you're a weapons technician at the Shinigami Academy? All you need to do is collect the souls of ninety-nine evil victims and one witch to make your living weapon into the fabled "Death Scythe". In this twisted world you gotta work hard to make the grade, especially when the God of Death is breathing down your neck.

SATURDAY "Life In The Fast Lane"

10AM – 12PM – Saturday Morning Cartoon Revival "S.W.A.T. Kats – The Radical Squadron": Jake and Chance were members of Megakat City's elite Enforcer Air Squadron, until a botched mission and a raw deal landed them guarding the city scrap yard. Not satisfied with their lot and with the city facing crime and crisis they take to the skies as the vigilantes T-Bone and Razor, the radical S.W.A.T. Kats.

12PM – 2PM – Nostalgia @ Noon "Lupin III – The Castle Of Cagliostro": Lupin III, master thief and ladies man, is up to his usual tricks. After a job goes south on account of a casino full of counterfeit money Lupin and his partner Jigen turn their sights on the source, the Count of Cagliostro. Sweetening the deal is the Count's runaway bride. And no one's a greater sucker for a damsel in distress like Lupin.

2PM – 4:30PM – "eX Driver": In the not-too-distant future, automobiles are completely automated, run by sophisticated A.I. programming and perfectly safe...almost. If the system fails and a car goes runaway, the eX Drivers, professional racers and daredevils, take to the streets to save the day.

4:30PM – 6PM – "Gunsmith Cats": Rally Vincent; bounty hunter, street racer and ace sharpshooter. Minnie May Hopkins; explosives expert and professional troublemaker. Always on the job and getting into the thick of things. But now they may be in over their heads as a conspiracy of illegal guns, drugs and corruption rages across the mean streets of Chicago.

6PM – 7PM – "Riding Bean": Need to get your cargo there NOW without dealing with those pesky Boys In Blue and you're willing to pay top dollar for the best? Then the Bean Bandit is your man.

7PM – 9PM – "Burst Angel": Society is overrun with crime and chaos. A sinister conspiracy is threatening to take over under cover of the confusion. The only thing standing between the world and the dark fate intended for it is Jo, Meg, Sei and Amy...four girls with the drive and skill to take on any menace.

9PM – 11PM – "Rock & Rule": In the post-apocalyptic future, mankind has been replaced by a new breed of humanity evolving from the dogs, cats and rats that survived. In this new civilization Mok, The Magic Man, reigns as the most powerful and influential rock star the world has ever seen. But as his stardom is fading he has embarks on a quest to unleash a mighty demon upon the world. All he needs to complete his dark purpose is one very special voice.

11PM – 1AM – "Heavy Metal": From the pages of Heavy Metal magazine comes an animated anthology steeped in dark magics, science fiction, sex, violence and Rock & Roll. Due to the mature nature of this program, no one under the age of 17 will be admitted to this screening, so keep your ID handy. You will be carded!
