McAfee Sux. Any suggestions
« on: June 08, 2009, 10:36:45 PM »

I have the version of McAfee that comcast gives for free.
After all the trouble I had with Norton, I thought it might be a good idea.
Then I started having a serious adware/spyware problem.
A friend suggested PCTools.
I downloaded it. Scanned.

And found OVER 250 medium or high threat items that McAfee apparantly ignored or missed.

Any suggestions for a good package that will do the antivirus and antispy/adware job effectively (unlike McAfee) without all the hassles Norton presents?

If it matters, my desktop runs windows XP, and my laptop is Vista Home Premium. (I know most of you look down on windows, but it does what I need and doesnt usually give me much problem.)

Yeah, McAfee sucks HARD

I use Kaspersky. It also picks up software vulnerabilites.

I have not had any issues with it in Vista64 either.

I don't look down on Windows so much as see it as a huge target with gigantic security vulnerabilities.  I use it at home and I haven't had to do much of anything beyond updating AVG and SpyBot every now and then.

The key is the user, though; the biggest problems exist between the chair and keyboard.
If you've got youngins on the machine, give them their own users and lock 'em down.
Next up are the tools you're using: I haven't had one "tech support" call from my mother since I installed Firefox and took away all the shortcuts to IE.
P2P apps would be the next culprit I'd look for.  I've had to clean a lot of machines thanks to LimeWire and its ilk.

Brian--

I've been happily using AVG for over a year now on my laptop.  I have also used Avast in the past, but after a certain period of time, it stopped being freeware and started bugging me to buy it.  So my recommendation would be "download AVG".

weird, all Avast has ever asked for is for me to go back to the website and get a new key. and I've installed it on 3 different comps.
