DEXCON 12 AUCTION
« on: June 21, 2009, 02:36:23 PM »

A simple reminder that Double Exposure has a wonderful auction on the Sunday of our major conventions. The auction is open for everyone to sell or buy.

A link to the DEXCON-12 auction sheet is here for your convenience.

If your interested in selling items:
1 print and fill out an auction sheet
2 drop it off along with the items for auction at registration before Saturday 9PM!
3 come by the auction to see your stuff sell.

If your interested in shopping come by Sunday morning, Look in your program books or BIG BOARD for the location and exact time.

thanks so much!

I have a couple of games, unwrapped, that I want to bring down for the auction. I think they might sell.
A couple of rare, out of print games.

If Barbara or anyone in the know is reading this - how long before we know the results of the auction? I donated two games, Anti Monopoly and Play to Become a Millionaire. Thanks.

^ I had to leave early, so I wasn't around at 2:30 on Sunday. Thus, the original question, when do I get notified? I'm guessing someone will e-mail me.

Why is the auction scheduled during a gaming slot? Why can't it be at 1 PM or 7 PM in the space designed to NOT have games running?

Sunday at 11 AM is 1) the day *after* most of the one-day passes attend, and after many people have gone home, 2) in the middle of a number
of DENCC finals and other games, and 3) just at the time that people finishing 9 AM games are scrambling to check out. Who hangs around on
Sunday if they are not involved in the gaming?

Saturday at 1 or 1:30 PM, or at 6:30, 7 or 7:30 PM gets rid of all of those negatives, allowing a bigger crowd, which leads to higher prices, which
leads to more stuff being put up for sale...

If it *must* be on Sunday, at least move it to 1 PM, when the games are not running. Then it can also be a way to unwind before going home.

Best,
Carl

I don't know the official reasons why Vinny schedules the auction for Sunday 11am but here are some things to consider:
1) The auction is scheduled for 3 hours so regardless of when it was scheduled it would conflict with a gaming slot.  Moving it to a later time on Sunday would also affect the dealers and attendees that put items up for auction as they would need to wait until the auction was over to see which of their items did/didn't sell and collect their money.
2) Someone from registration needs to be there as well to handle all payments, and Saturday is one of our busier days as well.
3) There were events running in the "auctions space" during the times that you mentioned.
4) Trying to compete with Sugar Fest on Saturday night means that people would be paying attention to sugar fest, rather than the auction.
5) Those involved with the auction have other duties during the con.
6) The Sunday slot allows people time to get their items together for the convention
7) There was a nice turnout for the auction during the 11am slot

Carl,

Is it possible that one translation of your post could be "Board Gamers want to Auction too!" ?

The entire convention - the ebb and flow of folks, the strain on our resources, etc are all considered when we schedule ANY event, much less the auction.

I hear your frustration, but I don't see a good resolution - Dave did a FANTASTIC job of summarizing some of the elements that go into scheduling the auction.

Sunday might not be the best day for everybody, but it is definitely the day that works best in the overall picture.

Here are a couple thoughts about the auction. I know they may not be good ideas but I'm posting them anyway because they may spark other ideas that are good.

Instead of one big auction Sunday what about multiple smaller auctions during the break times, maybe Saturday lunch and dinner, and then Sunday during lunch?

Could auction items somehow be advertised in advance so people interested could submit sealed bids? The auctioneer, or assigned proxy, could open the sealed bids, and bid so long as the floor bid hadn't exceeded the maximum of the sealed bids. A protocol for managing multiple sealed bids for the same item could be established in advance. I know this would be a lot more work but would potentially make the auction accessible for more guests.

in advance: we don't have the manpower, honestly.  That would be an entire devoted role and we just aren't that flush with staffers.  In fact, if we saw a 50% increase in handy, bendy, thinky staff, we *might* be able to eek out one person to be Auction Master.   Sad, but true.

On the up side, it's a clear demonstration of this group's ability to step in and step up. :-) we're good at bootstrapping with a shoestring staff. :-)

one thing I know another con group does is put the items up for auction out on display early.  perhaps selecting some of the prime choices might encourage people to make time for it, or at least attract attention to the auction.

might also make some people who are there for saturday only to say "wow... I want to bid on that.  I'll come back tomorrow for this!"

I'm not trying to make a huge deal of this, but it would be nice to be able to support the auction. Barbara sent the note telling people about the auction. I merely responded to point out that there were two groups of attendees who would not be able to attend as it is now set up - Saturday attendees (or those who have to leave on Saturday) and most of the Sunday boardgamers. Personally, I'm not an auction person anyway - I have no room for more stuff. I just thought there might be a way to improve attendance (and therefore bidding) at the auction.

If 7 PM on Saturday isn't good, how about 8 PM? There's no way to avoid gaming slots, but Saturday night slots only have a couple of tournament preliminaries.

I agree with Steve that displaying (or at just listing) at least some of the better items might spark people's interest. I don't think anyone will spend an extra night in the hotel, or drive any distance back on Sunday, *just* for an auction item, but people who only meant to game on Saturday afternoon might hang around later to attend the auction.

I do have some alternate views to offer on a couple of Dave's points, if the auction were to move to 8 PM:
1) Sat at 8 PM means the dealers don't have to wait on Sunday at all. Non-Sunday attendees can participate. There are only a couple of boardgame tournaments (and no finals) scheduled on Saturday at 8PM, and there isn't the rush to check out of the hotel at the same time. For any event, players can take time between turns to check out the auction. In the national tournament finals on Sunday AM, that usually isn't the option chosen. The only break is used for checkout.
2) Registration is mostly finished by 8 PM. Plus, we have lots of Boardgame staff and GM who can help with the setup between 6-8 PM, since we aren't scheduled to run games then anyway.
3) Those games were there because the auction wasn't scheduled there at that time. I don't think that scheduling is a problem if we plan ahead.
4) At 8 PM Sugar Fest isn't an issue.
5) true
6) Saturday night is just as convenient. If the games aren't there on Saturday night, they probably won't be there early on Sunday morning either.
7) I'm glad there were people there. It would just be nice if there were some way to include even more people.

Best,
Carl

But all of the LARPS start at 8PM which take a fair amount of people away from the auction.
