Reinstalled windows (clicked on "repair") over previous installation. Downloaded all current SPs.
After computer has been sitting idol for a while, I cant get windows (either old ones that have been sitting, or fresh ones just opened) to close.
Cant defrag. (oh yeah, it needs it)
Reinstalled sound board drivers, searched for newer drivers and installed them (let windows search on the net) but still no sound.
I'm using windows xp with all current service packs and Firefox. (IE is still on here, dont want to change anything else untill I know it wont make things worse.)
Main part of the reason for this is some idiot (I'm the only one with access) turned off PCTools auto update. Caught a bad case of Braviax. As well as some pretty obnoxious adware pretending to be windows wanting me to pay $50 for an antivirus (antivirus 2010 or something like that) (I know they probably would have had a little fun with my CC number as well, but not much, considering my current financial state)
Updated PCT, downloaded lavasoft (the free version) and that cleaned up my system. Had to remove the lavasoft because it kept calling yahelite's exe file a trojan virus, and I couldnt get it to accept the exception.
Anyway, this computer is pretty old, doesnt recognize two of its three disk drives (recognizes the CD, not the DVD or 'floppy') So I just need to keep it going till I can afford to replace it.
So the important things to me are, windows closing when i tell them to, making yahelite (unless someone has a better suggestion) work with lavasoft, sound, and defragging in that order of priority.
So, please keep in mind that I'm not one of the better computer people in here, and maybe give me a step by step for each of the problems? (after asking for any other info you need naturally) However you answer, please keep it as simple as possible.
Thanks
PS, using firefox on my desktop and safari on my laptop. Not sure which one I like better yet, leaning to safari. But want to try others like the new google one.
Re my laptop, does someone who's only use of wireless is to connect to the net really need "bonjour" on my laptop searching for printers and etc? Is bonjour responsible for the "network runout" that makes starting up take so long?
Thanks.
