I would be interested in GMing sessions at future conventions.  I've done so once before.  However, I'm usually not able to attend all 5 days of the convention due to work.  I would only be able to attend on the weekends Friday-Sunday.  The hours requirement for free admission and benefits would mean I'd hardly get to enjoy the convention as a player as the bulk of the time would be required for GMing slots.  May I suggest a policy change to reflect proportional requirements?  If I'm only attending for three out of five days, then my GM requirement time should be proportionally less than another GM who attends for all 5 days.  As a hypothetical, 12 hours could work to average 4 hours per day.  That's one roleplaying game a day or two boardgames a day.  The actual number of hours is flexible, but the 24 hours you have for regular volunteering just wouldn't do.   That's half the convention hours for a weekend.

This would apply for volunteering in general.  A flat number of hours doesn't take into account people who aren't attending the entire convention.  It's ok to have a minimum number of attending days, since volunteering for 2-4 hours for a one day attendance wouldn't work right, but basing volunteering only on 96 hours of convention time doesn't help those who are only attending for 50 hours.

Dexcon 13 was fun!

Thanks for the feedback.

Ask anybody who has been attending/working/staffing/GMing our cons for any period of time, and you'll find out that Vinny and I are incredibly flexible.  Drop us a line and say "I'm only going to be able to attend Friday through Sunday - if I GM one slot each day, can I get a badge?" and we're likely to say "SURE!"  Drop me a line and say "I'd love to help with Logistics, but I'm only around Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Help?" and I'm likely to say, "We ALWAYS need Sunday Minions! Work one shift on Friday and show up from noon to four on Sunday, and you've got the rest of the con to play!"

In general, we'd rather make exceptions to the rule for folks who come and talk to us than change the rule universally.

So, email me next con (avonelle@dexposure.com) and we'll get you set up.
