I'm on a boat!
« on: March 25, 2011, 01:59:14 PM »

Half a league out side of the Bazaar a small breeze begins to blow.  The air becomes slightly warmer, and the area seems to get slightly brighter.  Those Avatars sensitive to shifts in the currents of Magic in the Nexus can feel an eddie begin to form, and it makes the hairs on their neck rise.  The power builds, slowly at first, but with increasing speed.  The dimensions of that pocket of proper begin to distort, and with a sudden burst, the Nexus tears open.  I deafening tearing sound can be heard for miles, and the local power currents are thrown into a maelstrom.  Mages throughout the Nexus can feel the overwhelming power of pure Choatic magic behind that tear, and a lesser force of pure Shadow trying to hold it at bay.

Spectral water begins pouring from the gaping wound between dimensions, disappearing as it cascades across the field proper has shifted to.  Suddenly a longboat comes careening from the rend, engulfed in golden flamed the blacked hulled vessel is almost more charcoal than tar and pitch.  The craft is far to large to be a viking craft though it matches a viking longboat almost identically aesthetically.  As the boat lurches to the ground the rift snaps shut, cutting off the back third of the the vessel.  Anyone observing closely by any means may just make out the figure of a person engulfed as the tear closes, his silhouet burning against the backdrop for a moment before fading.

The charred remains of the ship lay broken across the floor of proper.  While the fire slowly burns out its amazing how much of the ship is still intact.  Wreckage from the ship litters the ground along with some less savory remains.

A short time later movement can be seen coming from the wreckage.  One of the larger bodies on the ground suddenly shifts to the side as a young man pushes himself from the ground.  He has minor burns across his exposed arms and face.  He wears strange armor consisting of plated gauntlets, boots, shoulder pads, and knee pads.  He wears heavy dyed canvas pants, and a heavy leather coat.  At his side are strapped two broken flails, their chains broken about halfway down their length, and across his back is a bastard sword.

He looks around for a moment, staring at the name still clearly painted on the boat.  He then begins pulling bodies out of the wreckage, and arranging them in a line off to one side.

His grim task complete the stranger stands looking down the row over over 2 dozen corpses.  He mutters a curse to himself, realizing he has no shovel and no desire to bury all these bodies.

"Ugh, Hood's Breath, what a mistake that was.  Now where am I and what the damned happened?" He says to himself, while turning in place and looking off into the distance.

With no idea where to go he starts wandering towards the Bazaar.

From the wreckage where blood has been spilled it begins to pool together into a mass sliding closer to newcomer. It grows and congeals into a beautiful and lithe woman's figure. Stepping out of her is a man, he wears all black dressed in a the fashion of a wealthy wild west gambler's outfit. His left eye glows red and the blood mass he just passed through does not seem to cling to his clothes. In an american accent" Howdy pardner,::He tips his hat, a black stetson:: new 'round these parts. I am Vladimere Ezekiah Grimme Son of Lugosi." He pulls a tooth pick made of bone from his breast pocket and begins to clean his teeth.

As Vlad steps out of the blood the new comer gapes slightly.  "Queen of Dreams, wheres Quick when I need him," he mutters to himself.  His face flashes fear for a moment before he clamps down on himself and puts on a soldiers' face.

"Well met Vlad, son of Lagosi.  Perhaps you can help me.  My name is Leoman Trafalager, 9th Squad Bridgeburners.  We were traveling to Aren, and alas I remember little else.  Where in Hood's Realm am I sir?"

"Rhi Bran y Hood," Traf's mouth seems to taste the words, as it trying to see if they fit.  "I've never heard the Lord of Death to have a first name, but I suppose all Ascendants were once mortals."

He looks in the direction of the bodies and frowns.  "I see no 'good' use for remains of that crew.  I don't recognize any of them, though 3 wear uniforms from the Malaz 7th.  The rest look to be Tisti Andii, but with all the burning and lack of heads its hard to tell."

He thinks for a moment.  "I would prefer to see those bodies buried and unmolested, but if you have want of them perhaps we could make a deal."

"If you prefer I can make them bury themselves. ::he looks over the corpses:: They have no power here and are very little use to me. Well Leo seems like I have no idea from where or when you are from. Please tell me a bit about where you come from and I may share where you are now."

"They can remain where they are.  And I'd prefer to go by Traf, or perhaps my squad nickname Mute."  He grins at the last part.

"As for where I come from, well where to begin.  I was born in Malaz City where I scraped by till I was old enough to lie about my age and enlist in the Marines.  They put me with the 2nd army and shipped me off to Seven Cities.  I was under the command of Whiskeyjack when Dassem Ultor sent us out into the Holy Desert Raraku after the surviving mages from the battle for Karashimesh.  After 2 months in that curse spawned desert we finally caught the bastards there was only 1 left, and turns out he wasn't such a bad guy.  When we got out the other wise we found our selfs just outside G'danisban on the eve of rebellion.  Well we swept in like Beru's vengeance and nipped the one out.

When we finally got back to Dassem in Aren he renamed us the Bridgeburners and put Korolo Dom in charge of us.  Well that didn't last long before they saw Whiskeyjack was the only commander for us and they had all of us shipped off to Genabackis for a new campaign.  Thats when things went south, fast.  While we was taking the north of Genabackis the Emperor and Dancer went and got themselves assassinated, though that story never jived well with me Hedge and Fidd.  I think Quick Ben worked it out a while ago but no one tells me anything anymore.

So that put Surly...I mean Laseen, in charge.  To make sure it stayed that way she knocked off Dassem and a few others and had Whiskeyjack busted down to a Sergeant.  Without the old Emperor we lost the T'lan Imass and the Genabackis campaign started to sour.  We lost all but 40 of us Bridgeburners at the siege of Pale.  We had be ordered to tunnel under the wall and plant Cussers to bring the walls down.  But when the mages up top started exchanging spells with the Lord of Moonspawn the dam thing started to collapse around us.  If it weren't for Quick Ben we never woulda made it out.  Made it out in time to see Moonspawn retreating at the cost of all but 2 mages and most of the army.  I tell you that Ammander Rake is a bastard.

Now Laseen musta really had it out for Ol' Whiskeyjack cause she thought we was best suited to infiltrate Durijistan and set up for the armies arrival and attack.  Sending the last 20 of us straight into the vipers nest.  The city was crawling with blasted Tisti Andii from Moonspawn.  I'm surprised they never sniffed us out.  Well the long and short of that place was the Tisti Andii saved all our skins, and the 2nd got outlawed by the Empire.  Well round then Kalam, Fidd, and Sorry decided they wanted to have their own little adventure, and Whiskeyjack thought it best if they took someone who can actually swing a sword.

So the 4 of us hopped a ship over to Seven Cities to try and make our way from Hissar to Aren and then back to Unta without causing any trouble.  Now since nothing we Bridgeburners touch seems to go as planned, we managed to land in Seven Cities right at on the brink of the Whirlwind.  We knew we had to do something drastic to make it to Unta in one piece.  So we went back to Raraku looking for Tremelor, and thats when things start to get fuzzy.  I think we found it, and way more, but I can't remember."

He takes what seems like his first breath since beginning his brief story.

"So where am I not, I have the distinct feeling you're not about to give me good news."

"You are now in the nexus. It is the center point of the multiverse. You follow? As for the dead, i will respect your wishes for now. I saw another new person head off with a group of avatars::points toward the bazaar:: well those who hold power here are avatars we can manipulate and control the nexus. Those that have no power more or less are inhabitants or potential avatars. Then there are manifestations and they are fical but represent the nexus pushing back. Comprende chief?"

Traf grins, "Not a lick, but thats nothing new to me.  What is a multiverse?  And so what are Avatars, mages?  And these Manifestations are Ascendants?"

"Multiverse, many worlds, multiple universes, every dimension. Avatars are the physical embodiment of there worlds will, they can be mages or anything for that matter. The manifestations are the embodiment of the nexus all the multiverse. Sounds good?

"I feel like its the best explanation I'm going to get for now.  So what is the difference between Avatars and Inhabitants.  Am I an Avatar?"

"You ::he looks him over:: most likely an avatar and you will begin to become more real when you choose a house to affiliate yourself with. Inhabitants mostly fill the nexus and are not powerful enough to really affect the reality around it. " Vlad begins to look disinterested and looking around for ogher things in the area to occupy him.

Traf cocks an eye brow at Vlad, "Do I bore you friend?  I warn you my mind is a churning torrent or questions, held back merely by my cursory conclusion that you are not a man taken to length conversation.  Perhaps before I lose your interest entirely you can direct me to some form of civilization.  I would desire a meal and a bath, and more information if it those things can be found."
