[Sanctuary] The invariable mark of a dream...
« on: May 18, 2011, 04:21:14 PM »

The procession makes its way from The Beacon, across the orchard, up to Sanctuary Cathedral.  Seneca pauses at the open door, and takes a deep breath.  He looks back to the laying form of Echo, and swallows.  He nods, barely perceptibly, and then moves everyone inside, and up the stairs.

They all make their way down the upstairs hall to an empty guest room.  There the wraiths place the bed down on the floor, and lift the sleeping girl out gently.  The gathering is quickly joined by a small decidedly female wraith.  Seneca comes down to her height.  "Take her inside, clean the trail dust off, and change her into a nightgown.  Use all your skill.  I don't want her awake, should the anesthetic wear off.  She is a guest."

The party of wraiths take Echo inside, led by the Wraithlette, who then gently shuts the door.  Seneca turns his back to the door, and then stands patiently by it.

He looks to Jon Stone, "They'll be a little while.  Can we get you anything?  Would you like us to prepare you a room?"

Sarah prowls into the room - a taller, darker, more menacing version of the Girl in Green, and wearing nary a speck of her "sister's" namesake color.

"For crying out loud.  She's suffering the whiplash of being careless with the heart of an Avatar.  If you think like a child while possessing the power of an Avatar, you're going to get flayed when the strands you rend with your very own hands snap back on you."  Her tone is curt.

"I appreciate your concern for your friend, but where were you when she was coaxing ill-considered sentiment from a Citadel. Werewolf. Avatar.?" The last three words land like a cracked whip in the suddenly too-thin air of Sanctuary.

"She will be seen to, but why the hand-wringing now? Why not when she was running amuck as most children do, in a playground with much bigger consequences than any mortal child faces?"

Steed beams directly to Sanctuary, nearest to Seneca, now wearing his usual body armor along with the new matte-black helmet. "I just got an emergency call from Andromache. What's going on?"

Seneca sighs.  "At ease, please John.  I've got a combination spiritual and medical exhaustion case resting in the room here.  I'm having her cleaned up, but you're here faster than I expected.""

"Understood," he says. His armor shuts down, the force-field plating disappears, revealing what could be described as 25th-century biker gear. He swings the entire front of the helmet upwards, somewhat ruining the bad-ass sleekness of his gear but showing his face. "Easier to talk this way," he says to nobody in particular. "So, what's the story?"

"Come on all of you.  She's going to be a bit, and I could use a comfortable chair.", Seneca leans on his staff, and ambles towards the large quarters at the end of the hallway.

Seneca get to a very plush wing chair, sits down in it, and then looks out his window.

"The quick version is that Echo Gamin of Octagon, has earned herself a large karmic debt, for her role in the untying of Jason Nightcaster.  She is twice cursed for having walked the black spiral.  Currently, her karmic account is in arrears, and she is being tormented for it.

According to the protocols, She made her way here looking for solace.  She has been granted a temporary parole, to give her a chance to recompose herself, and to reconsider her choices.

I asked Andromache to send her a Delphi, as she will need a guide out of the hole she's dug herself into.  That, and the rest time she is getting here, will be the last kindnesses I can extend to her.  Everything else will be on her shoulders to ask for, and acquire."

Seneca pauses for a moment, and smirks.  "When it rains it pours.  Gentlemen, I think you're about to have someplace bigger and more important to be.  You may wish to see to Torin's problems, and then come back.  The girl is not going anywhere, anytime soon."

Jon sneers at Sarah a little, "Well thank God you're here to point out our mistake.  What terrible friends and family we must be to allow her to be all to human.  God forbid we let a teenager be a teenager and experience love and heartbreak.  She did the right thing, not stringing him on in a relationship she didn't think had a happy future for the two of them.  Its not her fault she picked a mellow-dramatic lupine with insane confidence issues.  And its not our fault for not immediately insulating her from life and its twists and turns.  You think that because she's an Avatar she isn't entitled to live and learn like we all did in our youth.  I think you're getting to old to relate Sarah."

When Steed arrives he'll listen to the quick exchange of words and begin to follow Seneca.  "With all due respect Seneca, I'd prefer to stay.  Pending the readings I'm waiting on from Freeslide's sensor array there is no need for me there.  I'll leave that to the NDF, Fury's, and Guardians, my place is with Echo until she's better."

Seneca nods, and continues to stare out his window.  "As you wish Doctor Stone.  Though I'm curious, do you think of yourself more as a citizen of humanity, or a citizen of the Nexus?"

Steed holds up his hands in an intersecting formation. "Hang on. Time out. OK - I'm caught up on Echo, somewhat, but what all else are you talking about? There's about three other threads here."

"You hit the nail on the head Seneca, I'm just a citizen, my place is by my friend's side.  I'll leave saving the world to those more qualified and experienced.  You know, fuck it, more to the point, they don't need me there.  There are half a dozen other scientists, who are better equipped than I am, that will swarm all over that place and by the time I get there I'll be relegated to third string glass cannon.  I'm out but out on that one.  At least here no one is asking me to pretend the be useful, and I can stay by my friend."

"Everything ties together, my brother.

Our good friend Tor has gone and blown up his establishment in a spectacular display of released energy.  If you access your link to your planar scanning devices, I think you'll see.  Or you might simply poke at Green.  In any event, Tor is fine and unconscious.  In fact he's resting quietly next to her Ladyship.

As for my question for Doctor Stone, he made an intriguing differentiation in his snippy response to Sarah, that I'd like to explore, if I may.  May prove useful later on.

Doctor, you quipped that Echo should be allowed to be human.  To experience growing up.  Maybe I should rephrase the question though.  Do you consider yourself a human, or an avatar?  Furthermore, do you even perceive a separation or difference between the two?"

Steed's expression goes blank for a moment, then re-animates. "So - no immediate crisis, just exchanging information and determining what's to be done next, yes?"

"Perhaps I should rephrase, you're taking me to literally.  To use an old quote, 'to error is human...'  I'm trying to convey that none of us is ever wiser than our experiences allow.  Human, Avatar, robot, alien, these are all just titles we use to put people into our own frame of reference, it doesn't really matter 'what' someone is, it doesn't change the fundamentals of how 'we' grow.  We could sit and insulate each other from ever making a decision that may hurt us, but what would we ever gain.  We'd be forever stagnant.  We would all be 'children' in our experiences.  Instead we let each other live our lives, to grow and learn organically as we would in our home worlds.  Being an Avatar may change the scope of our power, and the ramifications of our personal decisions, but its doesn't make us any wiser or excuse us from the responsibility to always try and grow as individuals."

Deep breath, "Personally Seneca, I couldn't care less about the semantics of things.  I've watched enough Avatars evolve over the cycles to understand that none of them ever grew without pain.  Sometimes it only hurts then, and sometimes we all have to clean up the mess.  Either way none of us is Divine, and beyond mistakes.  We are all to human."
