Summoner Wars, Plaid Hat Games, and DexCon 14
« on: July 17, 2011, 11:04:44 PM »

Did you get to try out Summoner Wars at DexCon 14?  Did you enjoy it?  Did you want to buy a copy but couldn't?

I'm looking to get more support from Plaid Hat Games for future Double Exposure events.  Please write to Plaid Hat Games and let them know your experience with their game at mail@plaidhatgames.com.

I don't know if you follow the Dice Tower at all but they have an annual top 100 games of all time list and this years list had Summoner Wars as #5.

I'll be honest, the game isn't bad, my problem is dealing with the company.

You would think, in an area you're attempting to increase market presence in, if you want one of your demo-team members to run a tournament (especially one where players need to have the materials / game), you'd allow your rep to PROVIDE the materials on site!  Not only that...how do you have a tournament with no prize?  Literally they wanted me to run a tournament, and end it with: "Congrats you won." then walk away.  Tell me that is not assinine!

Not a good way to do business. At Dexcon the guys from Battleground Fantasy Warfare were runnings demos and if you won the game you won the starter deck you played with. It was a great promotion because once you got the starter deck you were more than likely going to buy the reinforcement packs. GMT games and Wizards of the Coast were very supportive in offering prizes for games I ran for them. People like to win stuff and what better way to promote your business is to have them win the game they are playing. I remember you running the demo for Summoner Wars at Dexcon. I wish I had time to play it then, looked like an interesting game. Must have been really frustrating for you.

I had units to sell...I actually sold out of ALL I had in stock in less than 30 minutes of me running a demo.  I'm pushing them hard to supply me with materials for the convention, but so far they aren't budging.  I was hoping that people from the convention were going to write on my behalf...but if they did, it wasn't enough to change their mind.
I really did have a good time showing off their stuff, but without any support, running a tournament isn't worth it, nor is showing off their game at all really.

Dave,

I always appreciate your enthusiasm, but why not just hold a few slots and show the company there is interest in ongoing events for the games? Days of Wonder, Z-Man Games, and SJG are always on the schedule because I (or the other demos folks) get the games and run them. Not all of them last more than one or two cons, but the ones that do make it so much easier to add more slots in the future and get the company to want to support the cons more. Telling them that you won't run a tournament (or demos) at all without prize support isn't likely going to make them feel that we really want to support their games going forward, especially considering how small many companies are. The biggest proof of getting the companies to pay attention is to get events up, show they are well attended, and if possible get the vendors in the dealer's rooms to not just stock the game but get lots of requests for the games. Ongoing interest and sales at Dreamation will make it tons easier to prove that they need to support a full tournament at Dex.
