Poll - Wargames
« on: August 15, 2011, 09:54:27 PM »

Just curious as to what games people would like to see run at Dreamation and Dexcon. Now this can be games that were run a couple of times in the past that you would like to see run again or games that have never been run before but you would like to see run in the future.

Here is my list:

1) BattleGround Fantasy Battles - Demos were run at this Dexcon and I would love to see this run again plus the guys running it were a blast.
2) OGRE - Once again was run at Dexcon and would love to see it run again.
3) Heroscape - Wasn't run this year at all.
4) A stretegic hex and counter World World II game.  There are plenty of different types of these games out there and it would be great to see an epic game run at one of the conventions.
5) Dust Tactics - By the time Dreamation comes along the miniature rule book should be out. Like to see this game run.

OGRE...   I hope SJG prints 6th edition before the con

World in Flames / Days of Decision?

These would probably be better served in the Board Game room, though.  Especially WiF... 15(?) 4'x3' maps!

From what I have heard OGRE 6th addition was supposed to come out in the 4th qtr this year. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on that one. World in Flames seems like a nice monster game.

Well I am looking to dust off Avalon Hill and SPI games from the past.

Panzer Blitz, Panzer Leader and Kriegspiel which all have scenarios that can be done in four hours (if I pre set the builds/counters for P\B/PL).

I have a fex more as well for tables of two with me as the "rules lawyer" for folks who never played or sometimes mix the PB/PL rules (yes, I have the General scenarios for British/American versus Russians in Berlin).

I started the Rusty Relics thread elsewhere for Avalon Hill and SPI style games from the 70s and 80s.  They can use lots of table space and usually are two player, unless it can cleanly split leadership by unit or territory boundaries (e.g. Panzer Blitz and Panzer Leader are definitely two player in standard scenarios; Flat Top and a few others can have a player with a Task Force/Fleet/Ground Airfield so a four to six player game is possible once unit and Airfield allocations are sorted out).  I have a few copies of some of the game for convention use now, but mostly are two player two to four or more hour games depending on the individuals and other factors (e.g. The Russian Campaign could be an eight hour two player game under certain conditions.).

I had been running Heroscape in previous years, but with the announcement from Hasbro/WotC of the cancelation of the line, I've been focusing on completing my collection and trying to gather what I can from those ditching the line with the cancelation to try and run anything.  Not to mention the few times I did run it, with the exception of the samurai siege event I ran, there's been little interest in the game due to the lack of support in stores thanks to distribution issues.  I still would like to run it at events but I want to get a complete set of the line first, then I can focus on planning possible scenarios for the con.

Would love to see Heroscape run again. I ran the game once and I didn't get a good turnout.

That was a problem I also had.  It's tough, with such a great game that had alot of potential but a lack of marketing, distribution issues, failure to price well, and then our failing economy that saw it killed.

Well I had the one of the Siege of the samurai castle by the ninjas and monks, and that one was fun, but then I did the Knights and Vampire one, and that didn't go so well.  After that they announced the D&D set and no one really dug it at all, and that was the end of it.  Personally I think if it had been marketed more for Game Stores and Minis Gamers and less as a normal Board Game, and Hasbro did support at more game cons, the game woulda taken off, and we'd have seen things like samurai mounted units, a marro-based castle for Utgar, etc.

It's the same reason Marvelscape failed, cause Hasbro didn't spring the cash for lisencing the minis of the feature films, just the comics, so they couldn't do "Theme Sets."  I ranted abit about this over on the Heroscaper board so I'll sum it up, using a current pair of examples: Thor in theaters, release a Heroscape Thor Gift Set, which would have Thor, Loki, that defender bot, and Thor's Team, then a second gift set of the frost giants, each set having a board-piece of a Rainbow Bridge.  Captain America in theaters, you have Steve Rogers, Bucky, a new Captain America sculpt, a new Red Skull sculpt, and the Cosmic Cube as an item for the field.  These small sets would have had a coupon to give you a discount on a core Marvelscape product, and sold at a reasonable $15-$25 price tag.  Since Hasbro owned the licenses for the feature films of the Marvel universe (Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Avengers) these would have been nice sets that would encourage buying the larger sets to play with.  Sadly, that'll never happen now.
