DEXCON 15 takes place July 4 - 8, 2012 at the Morristown Hyatt and Conference Center in Morristown, New Jersey.
Actually dude, early is the best time to nitpick, at least as far as I can tell. Rather hear about it once from someone before the entire world sees it then later on down the road, when a complete stranger goes, "Haha, y0or site suxXor" or something like that. The text color... yeah, of all the spawns of darkness, I hate pink.Though I do have a single question for the powers that be... Will there be House specific sections set up in the future, or is this something that will have to be handled by each house on a separate forum / system?
I know a lot of forum software allows for templates. Does this one? The neon colors on black are nicely legible, but they rather yell to the rafters "HELLO! I AM NOT A WORK-RELATED SITE!!!"It might be nice to have a template choice built in so that users can choose something stripped down for slow systems / browsing during lunch at work and then save the pretty for the home systems.I have to admit, though, the first thing I did was use AdBlock to hide the spinny dice. I'm not fond of things that try to drag my eyes away from what I'm trying to read. The Marquee button and the animated smilies in the posting screen may well go next.I'm also going to have to remember to bookmark dexposure.com/home.html because, as pretty as the swaying grass is, I don't need to wait a minute and a half for it every time I want to check the site.
Jenny, there is no need to be overly sarcastic. It was meant to be a one-time introduction, and there is a bypass link at the top of it. I have no idea why it takes 90 seconds to load for you; my average at 4 different sites is 15 seconds.
Vinny, I wasn't being sarcastic at all. The splash page flash animation did take a minute and a half to load for me from a clear cache at work (it loads faster after it's in memory). At home, just now, it clocked in at thirty seconds. Since I am most likely to visit the main site to quickly check a convention date or something else along those lines, it makes more sense for me to bookmark the main page rather than the splash page, just as I'll likely bookmark the forums page rather than clicking through the main page (saves a click or two).Animated gifs do, in fact, distract me when I am reading a site, although I do appreciate that other people quite like them, which is why I changed some customized settings on my browser rather than suggesting they be removed or anything. The idea of templates for the forum was also serious. The other two forums I visit frequently do have a template choice funtion, and are powered by two different software packages, so I was under the impression it's a fairly common functionality. It would be useful for people who are allowed to do personal browsing from work but don't necessarily want to be obvious about it. For example, I work in a bullpen, and the neon-on-black is clearly visible from three other workstations. Generally, on my other forums, I use the plainest template available to avoid being obvious about my personal browsing on breaks. At home, I use whatever's prettiest.
Vinny, really, this is not an attack, and the "minute and a half" remark was a specific technical issue. When I first visted, the bypass link was not visible against the black page background. The new link is much better, thank you.Thank you for answering the question about the forum templates. It is certainly reasonable to want a consistent branding approach.
