I have not seen the new book yet, but i will trust you.
All that I have heard about the new system so far is that the rules are better but the back story id weak in comparison the the original game.
My guess is 4 years before they go back to the original back story. Why do I say this.
answer: it will take 18 months for them to know that people don't like the new back story, 18 months to write a story about what the world is like after the end of times. 1 extra year to get the dummies that don't know the difference to buy as much of the new stuff as they can sell because they have already paid to have it written.
I cant Waite to read the post end of times game world.

I honestly think they have milked it for all that they can.  I am sure there are diehards that will buy anything they slap the WW logo on, but the days of moneyhats from the WoD are probably numbered.

I wouldn't be surprised if WW tried to go back to the old world, but I don' t think it's worth it for them.  The Killing of the Golden Goose divides WoD fandom into those that felt betrayed and those that decided to wait and see.  Anyone who felt betrayed is mostly likely never giving WW another cent again, so that's a lost cause.  The fans that reserved their judgement either chose to take a pass (more lost customers) or decided to give it a shop (old world converters included).

WW has already kept all the customers they possibly can, and jumping ship in an attempt to kow-tow to old fans just makes than even more of a fandom joke.  In business, you pretty much cannot admit to a non-castastrophic mistake without a regime change.  Anything less is a sign of weakness, and no one wants to invest in a company that might change their plans on the slightest change of popular opinion.  (Yes, White Wolf Publishing's sole purpose is to make money off of the role playing hobby, and you don't get to be an AA corp in a sea of A's without taking yourself seriously as a business.)

...Except that the End Times books sold ALOT of copies, and the nWoD books did the same.   I'm not seeing a catastrophe here.
But seriously, how much more COULD they have done with the oWoD?  Besides finally finishing a few Changeling and Wraith books that never came out, would we really need more books for Werewolf, Mage and Vampire? for F***s sake, they had the "Cthulhu type horror" book for Vampire!  Mage, which had possibly the single worst metaplot in the WoD, would have gotten more convoluted and stupid, while Werewolf, by the end, had books covering the tribes, and auspices, and every conceivable Umbral topic as well.

I'm glad that White Wolf ended the WoD when they did, since it was getting mighty stale.

If you like the oWoD, PLAY THE OWoD!  I'm still running old-school Vampire, Werewolf and Hunter games, and I want to start a Changling and a Wraith game.  I bought Gehenna and Apocalypse more as plot ideas then just to drop it on the table during a sesseion and saying, "Guuess what guys? Your characters are dead!"

I'm not saying the nWoD is a catastrophe.  I'm saying going back to the oWod would be calling it a catastrophe, or a at least a big enough mistake that they have to crawl back to its fans.

I'm glad that White Wolf ended the WoD when they did, since it was getting mighty stale.

But it was still incredibly popular.  They could have made continued the timeless New Edition ploy of rehashing old material with updated mechanics while trying to change just enough to plug flaws but not enrage the fanboys (see the internet drama over Shadowrun ver. 4.)  It still takes balls to kill your cash cow, and WW appears to have taken the huge risk for all the right reasons.

If you like the oWoD, PLAY THE OWoD!

Preach it, brother.  There are no gaming police, people.  No one is coming to your basement to make you convert to 3.5, and playing tournament banned cards in a casual game does not result in waking up next to a horse's head courtesy of WotC.
