This weekend for my and my friend Jason’s Birthday I’m hoping to get a bunch of folks to head to CBGBs. For those who don’t know CBGBs is probably the most famous dive bar/club in America, if not the world. Some of the greatest underground music emerged into the mainstream from its humble stage. Blondie, Ramones, Talking Heads, Lou Reed, Patti Smith, and many others were some of the names who came out of this legendary venue. Now, after 33 or so years later CBGB OMFUG has lost it’s lease, and most people think it has already closed, but due to the works of many loyal fans, and a few rockers paying homage to the place they got their start, CBGBs is merely teetering on the edge of oblivion rather then plunged full force into the void. So we decided we wanted to make sure we get there at least one more time before they go the way of the Ramones.
But enough of the history lesson, here are the facts:
I’m aiming my sites on 8pm arrival at CBGBs
CBGBs is at 315 Bowery
(Take the 6 subway and walk east on Bleeker to Bowery and it should be across the street [between E 1st and E 2nd])
or (Take F subway and walk west on E. 1st street to Bowery and turn north)
or find your own way there punk!
It will cost $10 at the door, ages 16 & up, 21 & up to drink
I won’t have anything to carry any cards or gifts home in so if you don’t think that paying the $10 cover charge is enough, then buy me a drink ;-)
The list of little known bands is listed below.
Please feel free to forward this to anyone who might even be remotely interested in showing up for any reason, such as:
I haven’t seen Michael in 10 years! It’d be cool to see him again!
That rat bastard never calls, never writes, I’m going down there just to rip him a new one!
I see Michael every single day of my life and I can’t stand it…. But I’ve never been to CBGBs, so I’ll put up with him for one more night.
I see Michael every single day of my life… even when he doesn’t know. I like to park across the street from his house and watch him
Every night until he turns off his light. Then I break into his trash and steal his mail. So I’ll definitely be there!!!
I am a member of the Church of Better People, and I recognize this as a religious holiday!
DOBA!
I’ve never met Michael Smith, but his witty reasons for showing up intrigued me! I’ll be there!
[Insert clever reason here]
Michael flew almost completely across the country to go to my birthday party, so the least I could do is take a train to the city for him.
I think Michael is really cute and smart and by the way I’m a beautiful and very wealthy woman. (PS if this is the reason, please let me know
Before hand so that I make sure I wear deodorant and clean underwear)
I’m going to just SAY that I’m a rich and beautiful woman so that Michael wears clean underwear and deodorant.
Who cares about Michael Smith? I’m going to hang out with my buddy Jason Hsu, who’s not nearly as egocentric and megalomaniacal!
Seriously, please pass this on to anyone I missed because I stink at remembering who is who with e-mail addresses.
If you can’t or don’t want to go, that’s ok, I’m inviting everyone with the expectation that most people can’t or wouldn’t want to head into the city. No need to apologize or explain, you are still my friend.

Thanks!
Michael
