DC Heroclix: Giants previews
« on: January 06, 2006, 02:37:48 PM »

So the Giants collectors set will be available first to those who buy a brick of Collateral Damage boosters and send in for the free Krypto figure. Those people will be entered into the Heroclix Collectors Club, and have first crack at buying the Giants set at a reduced cost. As was said in the CD thread they've announced the characters to be included: Chemo, Validus, Rita Farr, Giganta, Collosal Boy, Atom Smasher, and Alloy (from Kingdom Come!). Today the released the stats for the first one.

Chemo is considered an Experienced figure (as I'm sure they all probably will, even though Alloy should be Unique in keeping with the rest of KC), and is a member of the Suicide Squad at 144 points. This walking toxic waste dump is chock full of exactly what you'd expect: poison. Five slots of it to be exact. After that he gets some incapacitate and finishes with a click of pulse wave. He's got the big damage reduction progression: impervious, invulnerability, and toughness; and has a final two clicks of regeneration to get him back in the game. He starts with some force blast, but switches quickly to plasticity to tie up opposing pieces up to 2 spaces away. Gotta love/hate those giant figure rules. Finally, after taking one click he gets some ranged combat expert, which switches 2 slots down into close combat expert. He's really an all around kind of guy when it comes to destroying things.

Hopefully they'll put up the rest relatively soon.

So the second Giant came out for the new set, and I'm very pleased to see that it's Alloy from Kingdom Come. Apart from being an awesome sculpt, this fig has some pretty interesting abilities. Unfortunately he doesn't have plasticity, which a lot of people assumed he would, but it's ok because he's got plenty more than that.

He starts with charge and super strength, and barrier with an awesome 18 defense. After that he gets battle fury, flurry, invulnerability, and his attack goes up from 9 to 10. He changes back to charge, gets shape change, and loses super strength, but its ok because one click later there are some blades to be had. Finally he ends with a couple clicks of toughness, finishing off his damage reducer progression, as well as some perplex for a couple slots. All of this for 114 points and I'd say that he's very affordable for what he can do. Lets not forget the giant's 2-square adjacency rule coupled with the KC team ability.

Hopefully more comes out soon.

Ok, so I'm a little late with this one, but I was at Dreamation all weekend as I'm sure we all were so I deserve a little break. This past friday they released yet another of the DC: Giants figures, and the only thing to be said is that...well...she's got "large tracts of land."

Giganta weighs in at a slim 108 points with the Injustice League team ability, making her a candidate for the new Society alternate team ability. She starts off with your basic big bruiser combo in charge, super strength, and invulnerability. A little too quickly, she switches to toughness, but she keeps the others around for a couple clicks. She then acquires a few clicks of perplex, followed by some outwit, which makes her absolutely perfect for brilliant tactician, finally giving the IL someone who can use it (besides the E Joker from Legacy, but you never know where his dial's going to end up). The one questionable thing here is at the very end she has two clicks of earthbound. Since she doesn't fly, the only thing I can think of is that they are going to FAQ earthbound to say it also takes away a giant's 2 square adjacency, which would stink, but also make sense.

Next please!

Now that is a cute Idea, a special set of Hero Clixs based on the Super Friends.

They could make a Hall of Justice map and on the back coul be a Hall of Doom map.

Hey, that could work. Just make a 500 point unique character, "The Announcer", whose job is to announce, in that deep booming "Meanwhile....." voice, exactly what's going on at all times.

If he fails to announce an action in a dramatic voice, or if he messes up a name, he takes 1 click of damage. When he dies, the episode ends, and whoever can come up with the most SuperFriends'ish ending is declared the winner!

Unfortunately, Apache Chief is not owned by DC comics, he was an extra character thrown in by the producers of the Superfriends characters. Personally, I and many other people I know would love to have a fig for him.

However they did just release another figure for the Giants set in Rita Farr, otherwise known as Elasti-Girl, but they can't call her that anymore because of the character from The Incredibles. 76 points and the Outsiders team ability start this figure off, while her first few clicks have charge and toughness. A couple clicks of close combat expert make an appearance, and then her power switch to plasticity and super senses. Her stats are all kind of average, but what do you really expect from only 76 points? The most remarkable thing about this figure is the plasticity, which, when coupled with her 2 square adjacency can easily tie up a good number of opposing figures.

Only three more to go!

Today we've got Colossal Boy, a member of the Legion of Superheros, he weighs in at a pretty small 115 points. Not really that spectacular of a figure (which is a shame, considering how many people were looking forward to him), he does however have a few high points that make him an interesting option for you force.

He starts off with very basic super strength and leap/climb. Down the dial those powers then switch out for quake and charge. He also starts and ends with a couple clicks of perplex, giving him that extra little oomph whenever necessary. He's got the basic allottment of toughness for a giant character, but where he seems to shine (possibly) is his other defense power: defend, with a starting base defense of 17. The interesting thing about this is: with his two square adjacency, can friendly figures two squares away be affected by his defend? If so then you've just created the ultimate turtle team. Stick him in the middle of a large group of your figures and suddenly they're all as hard to hit as he is. His defense stays pretty consistent for half of his dial as well. It goes to 16 on his second click, but jumps back to 17 on his third click, and stays there for his fourth click where he switches to toughness.

Only two more, Atom Smasher and Validus. Who will be next?

Ok, the last two are up and of course I have them right here for you.

Validus, the big bad, weighs in at a meaty 152 points with the Calculator team ability, making him quite a dangerous wildcard on any team. Starting off with the basic beatdown combo in charge, super strength, and invulnerability, he loses charge extremely quickly (as in the second click) and gains some battle fury; which means he can't use his average six range, but he also can't be mind controlled. After losing battle fury a couple clicks later he gets some running shot and changes to toughness and energy explosion. As we all know, RS/EE is a pretty darn good combo, especially if you stick him with armor piercing. Finally he gets a streak of psychic blast with a pretty consistent three damage, and an ending click of ranged combat expert. He's definitely full of surprises for an opponent that may not know what he's capable of.

Finally, the figure who's on the Giants' set icon, Atom Smasher, actually appears to be a basic low-cost bruiser. There was speculation that he could be the first giant fig over 200 points, but he doesn't even break 100. A 97 point JSA member with a really consistent defense (perfect for his team ability), he also starts with the basic package of charge, super strength, and invulnerability. He changes to quake and toughness for a while, then gains a deadly combination in battle fury, flurry, and willpower. The willpower is only on his last click, but still, if he's lucky enough to land on it with his 3 damage value, that's 12 damage that he can cause over 2 rounds. As beatsticks go, he's a very affordable piece for what he can do, and would be great for a JSA team with his consistent defense, having 17 for 3 clicks, 16 for 3 clicks, a 15 and a 14.

That's it for this set, can't wait to pick it up.
