Dreamation 2006
« on: January 08, 2006, 02:01:28 AM »

Greetings All!

Here's the working schedule for Dreamation 2006's Anime/Video Lounge. Do keep in mind that there might be some minor changes or additions as the con draws near. I will try to keep everyone informed if that should come to pass.

The block-style programming is being expanded in the form of the "Bad Anime, Bad!" slot I've been threatening promising to start. This year's premier is "Magnos", and mere words cannot encompass it's fetid, yet hilarious, badness!

THURSDAY
6pm - "Cromartie High School": Kamiyama has just transferred to a new high school. Unfortunately for the honest and clean-cut boy, the school is populated by scores of delinquents…and a robot…a gorilla…and some guy who looks like Freddie Mercury. Can Kamiyama ever hope to survive?

8pm -"Azumanga Daioh": Japanese high school life is thrown into sharp relief in this "slice of life" comedy revolving around six students and their wierdo teachers.

10pm - "Aeon Flux": Everybody's favorite animated assassin is back! Incredibly deadly, unshakably determined (not to mention ridiculously flexible!) she cuts a bloody path of bodies and shell casings in her wake.

Midnight - "ReBoot - Season III": In the aftermath of the Web World War, Mainframe's darkest hour is still to come. Guardian Bob is lost in the Web. The viral forces of Megabyte and Hexadecimal are making their bid for total domination. And all the while, a new threat looms in the distance, the super-virus Daemon.

2am - Viewer's Choice

FRIDAY
10am - "Fam & Ihrie - Ruin Explorers": Fam and Ihrie are willing to do almost anything to make a buck. So when these debt-driven damsels discover the potential profits to be had in recovering a particularly dangerous mystical object, it means mortal peril for an entire civilization. A must-see for all D&D players!

12pm - Nostalgia @ Noon - "Galaxy Express 999": Space Opera at its finest by Leiji Matsumoto (Star Blazers, Captain Harlock). A boy's quest for revenge becomes a voyage of discovery as he travels from world to world aboard the Galaxy Express 999.

2:30pm - "Mobile Suit Gundam: 0080 - War In A Pocket": The One Year War that has raged between the Earth Federation and the Archduchy of Zeon is reaching it's climax. On the neutral space colony Libot, a young boy finds himself at the center of the covert operations of both sides. A must-see for wargamers and robot-enthusiasts!

4pm - "Full Metal Panic? - Fumoffu": Strap on your grenades and thumb your safeties to "Full-Auto". Sosuke Sagara, everyone's favorite military maniac, is at it again in a new series of high school hijinks. Can Kaname, the girl he's assigned to protect, ever keep him in line and save the student body from grievous harm?

6pm - "Steamboy": The latest film by Katsuhiro Otomo, the creator of 'Akira' and 'Memories'. Rei, an inventor in 19th century England, finds himself caught in the middle of a deadly conflict over a revolutionary new device. Steampunk Galore!

8pm - "Ghost Stories": An american dub of a mediocre japanese series, given new life in the tradition of "What's Up Tiger Lily?".

10pm - "Boogiepop Phantom - Part 1": Reality cannot be taken for granted. Lurking just below the surface are supernatural creatures, twists of perception and spirituality, a serial killer at large and Boogiepop, the "angel of death" that ties them all together.

1am - Viewer's Choice

SATURDAY
10am - Saturday Morning Cartoon Revival - "The Pirates of Dark Water": Thirteen Treasures of ancient time, Thirteen lessons of Rule in rhyme. To find the jewels in secret places, Follow where the Compass faces. If returned from the shore beyond, A new day dawns for Octopon. But if they fall into evil hands, Darkness descends on all the lands. For these riches two shall vie, In the realm of Dark Water where the Treasures lie.

12pm - Nostalgia @ Noon - "Adieu Galaxy Express 999": Two years after Tetsuro's voyage of discovery, he is offered an invitation to leave war-torn Earth aboard the Galaxy Express. His reunion with the beautiful and enigmatic Maetel is the beginning of his unraveling of the mysteries surrounding her.

2:30pm - "Appleseed": Original story by Masamune Shirow (Ghost In The Shell). In the aftermath of an apocalyptic global war, Deunan Knute has survived by wits, skill and a lot of guts. When she is taken to Olympus, a thriving and prosperous city/state, she is told she can finally live in peace. But this city hides a terrible secret and Deunan's heritage is the key to unlocking it.

4pm - Bad Anime, Bad! - "Magnos": The premier of our newest programming block, a showcase of the most gut-wrenchingly miserable shows ever to have seen the light of day. We take no responsibility for any damage, physical or psychological, that may occur during the screening of these turkeys!

6pm - "Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam - Heir To The Stars": A new, updated version of one of the greatest space opera/giant robot series in honor of Mobile Suit Gundam's 25th anniversary. Years after the near-apocalyptic One Year War, the Titans have been charged by Earth's government to root out seeds of dissent throughout the solar system with an iron fist. Camille Vidan, a young, ace robot pilot, experiences their tyranny first-hand. His loss spurs him to take up arms with the growing rebel forces and their fight for freedom.

8pm - "Final Fantasy VII - Advent Children": Two years after the end of Final Fantasy VII the world is starting to get back on it's feet and is working towards a brighter future. However, there is a new threat from an illness called Geostigma, and three men seeking Jenova. Cloud and his friends from the original game must once again reunite to combat the new threat.

10pm - "S.T.E.A.M. - The Movie": The new parody fan-dub from the creators of "This Is Otakudom".

Midnight - "Boogiepop Phantom - Part 2": See above

3am - Viewer's Choice

SUNDAY
10am - "Azumanga Daioh": See above

12pm - Nostalgia @ Noon - "Robotech: The New Generation": The third and final saga of the Robotech Saga. The Invid have invaded and conquered Earth. Lieutenant Scott Bernard, the sole survivor of the failed attempt to liberate our planet, must lead a band of freedom fighters to defeat the Invid Queen. (These are the episodes Cartoon Network would not air)

2pm - Hong Kong Theater -  "The Heroic Trio": (Live-Action) Starring Michelle Yeoh, Anita Mui and Maggie Cheung. Three fighting women from different walks of life find themselves pitted against each other in an evil plot. Can they put aside their differences to defeat the evil mastermind behind it all?

3:30pm - "Watership Down": Based upon the classic Richard Adam's novel, a frightfully realistic portrayal of the dangerous world rabbits. After a premonition of impending doom, Fiver, Hazel and a handful of others flee their warren to establish a new colony free of tyranny and human intervention.

So, something along the lines of...

Thirteen Treasures of ancient time,
Thirteen lessons of Rule in rhyme,
Two for the Kree Council, dwellers in the trees,
Four for the Scon-Kings, in their halls of stone,
Six for Human Men, doomed to sail,
One for the Pirate Lord, on his Maelstrom barge,
In the land of Octopon, where the Treasures lie.
One Compass to point them all,
One Compass to find them,
One Compass to bring them all and in Dark Water bind them,
In the land of Octopon, where the Treasures lie.

"Three Pings for the BSD-hackers, stoned to the sky,
Seven for the Linux-lords, in their ports of clone,
Nine for Mortal Macs doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Redmond where the Shadows lie.

One Ping to rule them all, One Ping to find them,
One Ping to bring them all and in the darkness BIND(9) them
In the Land of Redmond where the Shadows lie."

Nicely done, Adam-1. I created the "thirteen treasures to rule them all" and you try to 1-Up me with "One Ping to Bind(9) them all"...

Nicely done indeed, Adam-1.

Thanks, Octo-Boss. Can't take all the cred, though - I wrote that little bit (or would that be several DWORDs?) years ago, but I got the original inspiration from an old User Friendly comic (the "One True Ping" saga). From that, it was a short step to Googling the original Tolkein and re-working the poem to fit.

I *am* particularly proud of the use of BIND(9) in there, though. ;)

Hmm. Given that I play a cute young female character in the Nexus, and that this *is* an Anime forum... I think I should re-think the use of the phrase "Octo-Boss"...

Anybody know where I can get a copy?

I got a copy directly from the makers and have been given liberty to make copies at will, just as long as I'm not aiding the forces of Team E.V.I.L. by selling them for a profit.

However, I think they're trying to create a DVD master which I intend to get when it does happen. Once that comes to pass I can make copies straight to DVD for anyone interested.

Hey y'all!

I just got an update on S.T.E.A.M. DVD's. It's a bit of a double-edged response, so bear with me.

Scott Melzer, the writer/director/producer of the project, is doing a two-fold release on DVD. One is coming in the near future and is a bare-bones encoding of the movie. He's only making it available to conventions for screenings. The second release, which will enjoy much wider distribution, will have subtitles, special features, audio commentary, trivia pop-ups, etc. This will take several months to finish, but in my opinion it's worth the wait.

Hopefully it will be done before Dexcon or, at the latest, Southern Exposure. I will announce any new news on the topic on the forum and will be able to make copies available when I get it.

Till then, be seeing you...

Rock on, Brian!

If you haven't already, make sure you talk to Vinny about this "convention-only" demo DVD. That's the kind of thing we'd want to publicize - get the word out, and all that. :)

Just a thought - maybe he'd be interested in an "exclusive world-premiere" promotion arrangement at one of our conventions? Could be big...

Oh, it's nothing that grandiose. Besides, I just showed it at Dreamation and it's probably started running the convention circuit already. I'd be surprised if it doesn't get screened at Katsucon this weekend.

Perhaps it would be better for me to quote the e-mail I got when I enquired about the DVD in the first place;

"Videotapes of STEAM are currently available for anyone who asks, and Scott is working on a full-featured DVD for STEAM (with subtitles, special features, audio commentary, trivia pop-ups, etc) which will not be available for several months.

However, he is making up individual bare-bones DVDs especially for anime conventions that want to screen the fan parody for their attendees/members.

Scott has explained to me that he doesn't want to cause difficulties for people by making the bare-bones DVDs widely available now and then having people confuse them for the full-featured DVDs once those are generally available. He's rather wait until the full-featured DVD is complete to send out any DVDs to individuals."

So like I said, I'll let everyone know when I can get my hands on a full-fledged DVD copy and make copies available to all who are interested.

However, this does give me an idea. Maybe I can take an entire day, perhaps Sunday, and show nothing but fan parodies. Maybe call it Sunday...Paro-day or something stupid like that. We'll see. God knows I've got enough material to fill up the better part of a half-day like Sunday, maybe even more.

Either way, if there's enough interest I could be persuaded to show S.T.E.A.M. again at Dexcon.

C'iao!
