A friend of mine on the Lunacon staff informed me that Dave Stern passed away this morning.

Wasn't sure where this should go, but since he was a long time member of the family, I thought it should be noted.

Wow... Dave will be sorely missed.  Renny, Gene if you guys need anything at all, feel free to PM me, and I'll get my phone number out to you guys.  Until then, I'm going to go have a good long sulk and shed a few tears for a man who was a good friend.

That's REALLY sad news, indeed.  Cry   He was a sweet man.  I really enjoyed the times I spent playing card games (mostly Spades, Hearts, and Poker) with Dave.  He will be very missed.  Poker at DE events will now never be the same for me without him.

I was informed of this through an IM from a Lunarian... I knew him for a very short time... He was a great man and a heck of a poker player... I am sure everyone who knew him will miss him greatly...

All,

I know that I will miss Dave Stern  Cry, but I also know that he would be very upset if we only dwelled on his death.  Instead I challenge every one of us on these boards to come up with their favorite memory of him!  Let's talk about him and recall the good memories and what he meant to each of us....  This will also give Rennie and Gene a way to laugh and smile at the good memories we all have of him.

Love to all of you and RIP Mr. Stern...

Gene, Renny, we're all here for you if and when you need us.  Just give a call (or IM, or PM, or email.)

I think Julie's idea is a great one (and she's right, Dave would hate all this moping,) but there are just so many stories!  The one I've been thinking of the most was Dave's "How to Play Poker" lecture in the truck one night as he gave me a lift.  (A very profitable lecture that turned out to be, too.)  Then there's a certain IC interaction with Zero -- but I am *so* not going there!

The great thing about Dave was that he always tried to make things fun, instead of sweating the small stuff.  I'm gonna miss that laugh -- guffaw is more like it -- when something surprised him.

I am truly saddened to hear this. I honestly wish I could have said good-bye.  while I didn't play any RPGA, or such with Dave, I valued his friendship and such from the poker table, playing against him, and talking the game when we did.

I will truly miss him.

Living on a bomb and a prayer

« Reply #10 on: February 03, 2006, 02:29:07 AM »

I think a fitting tribute for him would be to leave one seat open as a sort of missing man formation at the Poker games at Spring Gathering and perhaps Dexcon. Just a thought. Gene and Renny, as someone who also just lost a parent my thoughts and prayers are with you. I know there is little that can be said that will ease your greif right now but just remember you have many who will give you an ear when you are ready.

Love to all of you and RIP Mr. Stern...

I didn't know Dave very well.  My contact with him was only playing poker.  I do remember the Saturday night game at the Christmas party last year.  It was late so I was tired and I really wasn't keen on playing fannish (sp?) poker but any poker is better than none so I did play.  Dave introduced me to a new game, "Twister", that I didn't like at first.  It involved a lot of passing of cards to other players and it was late and I was tired and it made my head hurt trying to guess what cards I should dump.  But later in the night Dave again chose Twister and after all the noggin busting thinking and card passing I ended up with FOUR NINES!  And we weren't playing with wild cards.  I was staring at a made hand; I just hoped I could keep from shaking like a leaf.  Well, I did take that pot and found myself warming to the new game quite a bit.   Wink

Although I didn't know him well I will always remember him sitting accross the table from me there at the Party.

I never truly knew Dave.  I knew him in the beginning years of Double Exposure and up to this point.  I can't contribute a story but I can contribute an idea.  Instead of leaving a seat empty we change the name of the Dexcon poker tournament to The David Stern Poker Tournament adding one round of the tournament to be one of his favorite Fannish Poker choices whether its twister or what have you (pardon me I really don't know Poker).  Anyway I can say one definite thing, he will be missed and his love of poker has blossomed within many a friend he had.  He will always be remembered in the Double Exposure Family every time there is an event with poker being played into the wee hours of the morning.

Hey Dave, keep laughing and smiling now you get to play poker with some of the best.

Mark, the game you're thinking of is Anaconda... most assuredly one of Dave's favorites.

and Tim... I agree wholeheartedly that the tournament should be renamed in his honor... I just couldn't bring myself to be the first to say it.
