Indy Heroclix: Invincible! previews
« on: March 13, 2006, 01:19:31 PM »

So in the same vein as the DC: Giants collector's set, with the release of Sinister in June, those that buy a brick will be eligible to buy the second collector's set, Invincible, at a reduced rate. Based on the popular Image comic, this will be the first real "set" of Indy heroclix (not counting the City of Heroes/Villains) since the very first starter came out a few years ago. I'll admit that I don't know that much about this series, but I'll still try to do it justice with my previews as they post them. Wizkids has posted the icon for the set itself, so it's gotta be only a matter of time before the first figure is put up.

See you then!

I bring you a break in your Marvel: Sinister previews to bring you this exciting announcement.

At the second Constructed event in July, Wizkids will be offering a special prize kit that includes a limited edition figure of Atom Eve, the classmate of Invincible! This is to foster even more interest in the collector set that will be offered for buying Sinister by the brick. No other information has been released about the figure, but you know as soon as I have it, you'll see it.

Seems like it's been forever since I've given you anything, hasn't it? Well here I am with not one, not two, but three of the figures from Invincible for your viewing pleasure.

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/indy/figuregallery.asp?unitid=11344
First we have the title character himself. Weighing in at a very manageable 109 points, Invincible brings back memories of the Black Adam figures. A fairly straightforward close combat brick with an opening shot of hypersonic speed. That's not all he's got going for him though. He also starts with super strength (and keeps it for most of his dial), as well as invulnerability. Toughness comes in a little ways down the dial, and he finishes with two slots of energy shield/deflection. Close combat expert also makes an appearance mid-dial, maximizing his damage potential. And for anyone who thinks that having only one click of HSS up front limits his mobility, I didn't mention the three slots of charge that follow it. Top this off with his brand new team ability of the Guardians of the Globe (of which we have no information for), and he's a pretty attractive package.

Next we have Invincible's classmate, Atom Eve. At 73 points this girl is all about ranged combat. Her numbers may be mediocre, but she makes up for it with her varied damage dealing abilities. First and foremost of course we have ranged combat expert for two clicks up front and then two in the back. She starts with energy explosion, switches to incapacitate for two slots, then goes back to EE for another three, and finally ends with a slot of psychic blast. All of these work very well with her range of 8. Round it all out with a few clicks of barrier for defense and the Guardians team ability and she's a pretty decent ranged attacker.

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/indy/figuregallery.asp?unitid=11342
Finally we have Angstrom Levy, one of Invincible's enemies. While the game is not lacking for super genius type figures, Levy does have some uniqueness to him. For 80 points you get a full dial of phasing/teleport to represent his ability to open portals. Opening and closing willpower surrounds a few slots of mastermind in the middle, and perplex does the same to outwit (if only he had a team ability, he could be a brilliant tactician). Then on the attack side he's got three opening clicks of incap along with a six range, and his attack never goes below 9, and raising to 10 on his second click. Not very impressive, but at only 80 points he could be a pretty decent annoyance to your opponent's team.

Well there you have it, the first look at Invincible. WK has been pretty sporadic with updates lately, let's hope it gets better.

Ok so maybe WK isn't being so wonky with their updates, because I've got another figure from Indy: Invincible to show you!

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/indy/figuregallery.asp?unitid=11341
Allen the Alien is a fun little 87 point figure that could end up being the favorite when it comes to playability. First of all he has very stable stats, with an attack range between 11 and 9, and defense between 17 and 15. Throw in four opening clicks of combat reflexes and that gives him a starting 19 defense in close combat! Once the CR goes away he has two slots of willpower where his defense remains at 17, and finally two clicks of regeneration to keep him in the game. Having no range doesn't hinder this guy at all, as he's purely meant as a close combat tie up piece. To this end he's also got three slots of plasticity (entangle anyone?). In the offense track he starts with two clicks of incapacitate, which in close combat really isn't used (unless playing the knockdown feat), and with him it won't really be an option either considering the five slots of close combat expert that he's got, followed by two of exploit weakness at the end. The only hindrance this guy might have would be the lack of a team ability, but that's easy to overcome.

Enjoy!

Well as Tiny said, two more of the Invincible figures are up on the website, which means it's time for reviews.

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/indy/figuregallery.asp?unitid=11346
First up is Robot, a nice little double-based figure (hopefully a transporter then) for 92 points. A member of the Guardians of the Globe (which the TA has been revealed and I'll talk about it later), he starts off pretty strong with one slot each of running shot, toughness, and perplex to back up pretty decent stats. Three slots of energy shield/deflection and two of combat reflexes follow the toughness, providing for a good defense for his entire dial. As for damage powers, the perplex leads into two slots of outwit, one of ranged combat expert, and two more of perplex, making him perfect for brilliant tactician if you can spare the points. The only drawback to the figure are his two ending clicks of earthbound, but it's a small price to pay for the rest of the package, which includes yet another very stable attack value.

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/indy/figuregallery.asp?unitid=11347
Then you've got Titan, a 55 point brick with a couple of little surprises in store. He starts off with the basic powerhouse package: super strength and toughness, and throws in an opening slot of leap/climb on top of that. The surprises begin four clicks down on his seven click dial, when he gains both flurry and willpower while keeping his super strength. As if that wasn't enough, outwit makes an appearance on his last two slots to really stick it to anyone who may be trying to finish him off.

Finally for today, the revealed TA for Guardians of the Globe. At least this is what I've heard and it's supposedly from Seth himself (HC designer for those of you who don't know), but whenever a GG member rolls doubles on a successful attack, instead of causing knockback, they essentially incapacitate the target as well as dealing damage. In my opinion this is a very interesting TA that could potentially turn the tide of battles in some situations.

I'm pretty sure the only figure left is Omni-Man. Which figures like these, one can only imagine what he'll be like.

And here you have it. The final figure for the Invincible collector set: Omni-Man. I know that for a lot of people this was the make or break figure on whether or not they'd order the set; well, I don't think any of them have cause for disappointment.

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/indy/figuregallery.asp?unitid=11345
At 207 points, this figure finally shows what Seth is capable of when it comes to heavy hitters. As you would expect he has the full complement of damage reducers on his 10-click long dial: two of impervious, three of invulnerability, and three of toughness. For those last two clicks defensively he also packs some combat reflexes, and considering he has no range, he's going to be in melee the whole time which is a big help. Super strength is loaded up front for three slots, and is followed by three of quake, but when it comes to attack the big story here is the numbers. OM has three slots of a 12 attack, one up front and two smack in the middle of his dial, providing a big surprise to anyone who manages to hit him and thinks he's done for. His damage is fantastic as well, with exploit weakness up front and at the end, and two slots of close combat expert in the middle lining up perfectly with those two slots of 12 attack. Luckily with all of this power he's also very mobile. Hypersonic speed comes in first, and leads directly into three clicks of charge, making it no problem at all for him to get exactly where he needs to be. Finally, further down the dial he gets three slots of flurry making the possibility for some big damage.

Overall a fantastic centerpiece figure for any squad. Not quite a contender against V Icons Superman, but he's damn close.

And that's it for Invincible. All we need now is the official wording of that team ability and any other cards that may or may not be in the set, and that'll be it.

And here you have it, the official wording on the TA for the Guardians of the Globe. The full explanation on how it was developed is here:

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/indy/hc_article.asp?cid=40938

And here's the TA:

Guardians of the Globe (Team Ability)
When a member of this team rolls doubles on the dice on a successful attack roll, the target is not knocked back. The attack deals damage normally. If the target has zero or one action token after the attack has been resolved, give the target an action token.
