[Proper, enroute to the Digi-Net Cafe] Musings on the ride
« on: March 22, 2006, 11:52:55 AM »

The Soviet Esper, Yuri, looks out the window of his automobile, heading towards the Nexus Proper.

"Something on your mind, Sir?" The driver comments. Yuri smirks, "My thoughts are on the future, Captain. Just as you watch the road ahead, so too must I." The driver nodded, and indeed kept his gaze fixed on the road ahead. Yuri's gaze remained fixed on the outside world. Visions of Proper in Winter, the snow and ice glistening in the sunlight, just like it was in Mother Russia. He invisioned children running in the snow, making snow-angels and snow-manifestations, and having snowball fights. The Esper's mind continued to wander, his thoughts of times and places long ago blending almost seamlessly with his visions of the world around him now.

Yuri's automobile, the GAZ-A, pulls to a stop infront of the Cyber-Café. What brings the Soviet Mentat to this place is known only to him, and the Captain knows better then to inquire. He opens the door for his commander and stands at attention.

"I'll call for you when I need you, until then you're dismissed." Yuri gives the captain a nod, and then enters the Diginet-Café...

(OOC: Thanks for the update. Can't believe I forgot the name.)

[OOC: It has been confirmed that is it in fact the DigiNet Café.]

As if on cue, Spencer pops up from behind the counter, rag in hand. "Good morning, Yuri." She smiles and tucks some escaped hair behind her ear. She is dressed in her normal work attire; a pair of black slacks, white button down shirt and a green apron.

"What can I get you? We have a new flavored coffee, Kiwi-Mango, if you'd like to try it. They haven't been very popular," she gestures towards the few people already playing games on the terminals. "They don't take to change very well. That is unless it's a new upgrade to their game of choice. Then they’re all over it like white on rice.” " She grins.

Yuri gives a nod to Spencer as he enters the cafe, "Good morning, Spencer. I do trust that everything is going well for you?" The Esper strolls to the counter and takes a seat. As she gestures, Yuri follows and notes the few folks at their stations, tapping away at the keys, going about their simulations.

"There are some folks who greatly fear change, even a change for the better." Yuri remarks, "You mentioned a new flavor? I do believe I shall try some. You only live once, I suppose, but I doubt that ancient remark still holds weight within the Nexus." Yuri will wait until the Kiwi-Coffee is served, and will settle the tab immediately. He will take a sip, and then give a nod, "It isn't too bad. No substitute for regular coffee, but interesting none-the-less."

He'll pause for a beat, and then, "So, if I may be so bold as to mix business with casual conversation, I presume you've heard about my latest endevour. I have heard several opinions, but I do wish to hear your opinion of the Circuit."

Spencer blinks. “Diving right into it, eh? Well there’s one thing to say for you and that’s you don’t beat around the bush.” She absently wipes at the counter before grabbing her bottle of water and taking a sip.

“Of course I’ve heard about your Circuit. It sounds like it could be a good thing. It sounds like a great way to house information.”

She takes another sip. “And it also sounds like something that can be bent over a table and f***ed up the ass. The concept is a nice one, but something I feel might be impractical and possibly something that can and more than likely will, be abused.”

She smiles. “How’s that coffee? Are you ready for your usual?”

Yuri chuckles, and sets the Mango-Coffee down, "The coffee is.... interesting, to say the least. Not terrible, just perhaps a few years beyond my threshold. Yes, I do believe I'll return to my usual. Thank you Spencer."

Yuri accepts the coffee and gives Spencer's words some thought, "As all things, it has the potential for great good or great harm. I do believe this..." he taps his Octagonic Sigil, "...causes Avatars to almost immediately assume it to be a weapon, or a doomsday device."

He takes a sip of his coffee... Coffee-Flavored Coffee... and returns to the conversation, "You've done a good job here, Spencer. I never even noticed this place until you began to operate it." He takes another sip, "I do plan on inviting all of the Nexus to its activation, Spencer. I do not know who will attend, but I would be honored if at least you were in attendance. Oh, I almost forgot..."

Yuri fishes around in his jacket, and produces a manilla envelope, within which are several black and white photographs of what looks like some form of feline in a glass tank. In some of the shots, a version of the creature appears in the shot, though it looks more "added in after" then "actually in the shot". In the shots with the second creature, it has its paw on the glass, while the creature within the tank has its paw up, as though reaching out to touch the world. The creature in the tank looks semi-developed: The skin is missing in several places, but overall the creature is recognizable as a felinoid.

"Pictures of Esper. She doesn't have long to wait before she's born. That..." Yuri motions to the second creature, "...is an animated version of her sentience. Cardinal Frig'em'all decided to let her roam around the laboratory in a toonic form of his own minor design. She chatters on and on, learning everything she can. Just the other day, she taught me how to send letters and information though some form of Intra Net." Yuri chuckles, and then shakes his head, "She can't wait to meet everyone."

“Oh I wouldn’t say that most avatars believe that just because you are in Octagon means you’re creating a doomsday device. At least, I don’t.” She smiles. “And of course I’ll be there for your unveiling. I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

She accepts the offered pictures and flips through them. “I have to say Yuri, I’m impressed. You’ve created life by unconventional means and given it consciousness before it has been born. It’s quite remarkable.”

“How long now, if I may ask.”

Yuri takes a sip of his coffee, "I appreciate that, Spencer, and I thank you."

He watches her flip through the pictures, smiling at the memories that each photo holds, "Thank you again, Spencer. Esper is far more then just a project, she is in sorts my daughter. As far as when, well... " The Soviet chuckles, "She's recently found an error in my original math, and has since corrected it. I originally projected for at least another eight months, but Esper herself assures me that it won't be that long. She projects five."

"She is boundless curiosity. She's constantly reading books, looking at pictures and paintings, watching over my shoulder as I design blueprints, or watching television. She's practically addicted to Lightfoot Television. I hooked up a Betamax unit to my television so she can record some of the shows." Yuri chuckles, "When I was using Freeside to search for an appropriate site for construction, she was always over my shoulder. The other day she asked me 'Father, how big is the Nexus?' and the only answer I thought would be both accurate and satisfactory for her curiosity was 'it is as big as it needs to be, and then a hundred miles more.'"
