Marvel Heroclix: Supernova previews
« on: May 17, 2006, 01:50:19 PM »

There you have it, the first glimpse of the October heroclix release: Supernova! Thanos, Hyperion, Silver Surfer, and Thor. Looks like they're already off to a good start. It will include members of the Squadron Supreme, Guardians of the Galaxy, and New Warriors, as well as some of the other cosmic powerhouses of the Marvel universe. Let's not forget more skrulls, kree, shi'ar and badoons. This oughta be a fun set.

As always, when previews start coming, they'll be right here.

As the list of confirmed characters grows, I figured I'd share with everyone here.

The full list is as follows:
Silver Surfer
Thanos
Thor
Hyperion
Nova (Richard Rider)
Drax
Dr. Doom (Beyonder, brick mail-away)
She-Hulk
Vision
Machine-Man
Captain Marvel (Genis)
Mantis

Can't wait to see who else we get.

And so it begins...

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/gameresources.asp?cid=40995

In this article WK doesn't reveal anything specific about certain characters, but they do key us in on to some very tantalizing facts.

1. There will be 3 (!) power cosmic figures.

2. There will be quite a few figures over 150 points, and one powerhouse over 250.

3. There will be a full REV set for each of the alien races: Kree, Skrull, Shi'ar, Badoon.

4. There will be more members of the Exiles, New Warriors, and Wrecking Crew, as well as members of the Squadron Supreme and Guardians of the Galaxy; and at least one of those will get an ATA.

5. There will be a whole bunch of cards, including the first bystander generic since the original map sets.

They also show us a couple of the cards (one feat, one BFC) that will be in the set. Whirlwind is a feat that makes force blast a little bit more useful, allowing it to work on more than one adjacent figure. Then there's the Alpha Strike BFC, which you just have to read to understand. There's no way I can put it into words here without just copy/pasting it. And I'd rather not do that.

By the way, did I ever mention before that the New Guy Night figure for this set will be the Silver Centurion Iron Man? No? Well, it is.  ;D

So there you have it, previews for Supernova have officially begun!

Well I was writing a fantastic review for the four (!) figures they've posted on the WK site for Supernova, but then something happened to my computer and I lost the whole thing. I am way too tired to rewrite all of it, so I'll just give you the links and you can go check it out yourselves.

NGN Figure: Silver Centurion Iron Man
http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=11978
160 points, Avengers

Silver Surfer, Rookie
http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=12034
121 points

Silver Surfer, Experienced
http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=12035
189 points, Defenders

Silver Surfer, Veteran
http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=12036
265 points, Power Cosmic

Also, Seth Johnson has written his own articles with his designer notes, so you can check those out as well:

Iron Man
http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/gameresources.asp?cid=41015

Silver Surfer
http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/gameresources.asp?cid=41013

Seth also mentions that he goofed when he talked about the point breakdown of the set. There will actually be two 250+ powerhouses in Supernova, and since it's already been confirmed that Thanos is the other one, we now know who they both are. Thanos and Surfer are archenemies too. That's going to get interesting.

Enjoy!

And yet another character has been released, or at least partly. The stats for the R and E versions are up, but not the V yet. Hopefully it'll come soon. And who am I talking about? None other than Genis-Vell, the son of the original Captain Marvel, who was bonded with Rick Jones for a while.

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=11999
The Rookie, known as Legacy, is only 81 points, but it makes sense considering that both Rick and Genis are still getting used to their powers at this point. As such, his numbers are really nothing special, and he's got all of the components of the usual flying brick. Two slots of running shot up front complement his 8 range, and is followed by a single click of charge. This is in direct opposition to this attack powers, where he starts with super strength for four clicks and ends with three of energy explosion. One click of invulnerability keeps him protected at first but it quickly gives way to toughness for another four slots. That's about it.

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=11959
The experienced Captain Marvel, a 108 point Avenger, represents the character realizing that he can do more, but not really able to control it as of yet. As such, his dial is a lot more unpredictable, especially around the middle. He starts with one of those dreaded activation clicks, with earthbound, combat reflexes, and close combat expert (too bad his damage is 0). Once he slams those nega-bands together he does a complete turnaround. His powers are a complete mishmash, so I'm just going to list them and you can look at the dial yourself. For speed, he's got running shot, mind control, phasing, and stealth for some odd reason. In attack, he once again starts with super strength, but goes through quake, pulse wave, and psychic blast. Defense gives him invulnerability, toughness, super senses, and ES/D. While in damage he gets a decent dose of RCE, along with a single slot each of outwit and probability control. My favorite click happens to be number seven, with the combination of stealth, psychic blast, ES/D (with a base 17 defense), and outwit. His attack is only a 9 at that point but average is fine with me.

The veteran, known as Photon, weighs in at 138 points, but other than that all we know is what Seth said in his article. Which is right here:
http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/gameresources.asp?cid=41022

Hopefully that veteran gets posted soon, so that I can write something up for it.

And now the Veteran of Genis-Vell, known as Photon!

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=12018
At 135 points, this Avenger represents the character at a much more stabilized point in his powers. His stats have leveled out, and his powers are much more consistent. Four slots of running shot give him the mobility he needs, while an opening slot of energy explosion that goes very well with RS gives way to super strength for five slots. In terms of defense, he's still very diverse, beginning with invulnerability for two clicks, super senses for one, toughness for two, and ES/D for two more. His cosmic awareness grants him three slots of probability control (one up front and two further down), as well as three of outwit (one after PC and two at the end. Right in the middle of his dial he also has two clicks of RCE with a decent damage value and his 10 range.

So let's hope they throw us a few more figures before next week.

Two new characters, which means six new figures for me to review! First we have the diminutive Ant-Man!

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=11947
The rookie is a 48 point Avenger (only 2 points less than his old LE hockey puck), with a little bit of a changeup when it comes to powers. His stats are pretty decent for someone of his point value, especially with his opening 18 defense. That value decreases over time, but in the back half of his dial he gains super senses to help protect him. An opening slot of outwit helps him out against beefier opponents, so that he can charge right in (using the power of the same name) for his first two clicks. After the charge he gets two slots of leap/climb, so that he can get away from a sticky situation, and finally two slots of stealth keep him out of the line of fire. A decent package for so few points.

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=11948
The experienced leaves the Avengers and jumps up to 66 points. This figure is a little bit more cautious, and a little more willing to help his teammates (which is funny considering this is when he doesn't have a TA). That 18 defense comes back, with an opening slot of super senses. On his second click it goes down to 17 with defend, but after that it goes right back up to 18 for two more slots, ending up on 16 for his last click. He's got perplex for the first half of his dial, also showing that this version would rather hang back and help out; and if someone does come after him, he's got an opening slot of leap/climb to get away, followed by two of stealth, and then more leap/climb to finish the dial. Finally if he really has to fight, he's got incap for all except his first click. His four range is limiting, but he's tiny, he shouldn't be able to reach that far anyway.

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=11949
The 81 point veteran rejoins the Avengers and gets a little bit more aggressive. 18 defense once again starts things off, but now super senses sticks around for three slots right up front. Perplex is on the dial for four out of his seven clicks of life, to help out his own values or those of his allies. Charge makes a return on his very first click,  but it quickly gives way to stealth for three slots, and then leap/climb for the last three. This version also has incap, only this time it's completely front loaded for three slots where his attack value is at its highest (9). His range stays the same, but honestly, he's really the kind of guy you'll want to keep in the background perplexing and not just throw him into the action, and if he does get attacked, that's what the 18 defense is for.

To avoid losing this, I'm going to post it now and make another post for the next character.

And now we have the Avenger's robotic powerhouse: The Vision!

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=12062
The rookie weighs in at 65 points and perfectly demonstrates his density altering ability. For the first three clicks of his dial, he's basically intangible, with phasing, exploit weakness, and one click each of super senses, ES/D, and toughness. His next two clicks get interesting, with earthbound (he's too heavy to fly), super strength, impervious, and close combat expert. He can increase his weight to a few tons, so if he hits you, it's gonna hurt. On his last two slots he gets phasing back and his defense is low, so that he can get away and hopefully get repaired.

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=12063
The experienced is 108 points and is much more focused on ranged combat. He starts with his basic phasing, super strength, toughness, and perplex (what we all remembered from the old unique figure), but one click later gets running shot, psychic blast, and invulnerability for two slots. His damage is low, but that's alright, he's running around blasting up to 8 squares away pretty consistently regardless. After that he goes back to phasing, gets super senses and incap for two slots, then two of exploit weakness, two of toughness, and ends up with two of perplex. He's a pretty well rounded figure with plenty of options.

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=12064
Finally the veteran, at 137 points, is a virtual rainbow of powers. The first half of his dial is made up of phasing, super strength, incap, invulnerability, toughness, super senses, and perplex. After that he does two slots of density shifting once again, with his earthbound, super strength, impervious and close combat expert. He then finishes off with phasing once again, toughness, and outwit, with a final slot of regeneration just in case. All in all a great representation of the character, and one that I can't wait to get my hands on.

Here's hoping for more soon!

Well, I promised, and it took a couple of days, but here it is, my review for Hyperion!

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=11975
The 177 point rookie represents his Squadron Sinister version, and as such has the Sinister Syndicate team ability. Other than that he's all beatstick. His combat values are all pretty average, with a starting attack of 10, damage of 3, and his highest defense is a single slot of 17. Charge leads things off followed immediately by running shot, two clicks of hypersonic, two of flurry, and finally two of force blast. For attack, he's all super strength for the whole first half of his dial. Defensively he starts off with two clicks of invulnerability but then switches to toughness for six more. Those flurry clicks are made even crazier with the addition of battle fury. Finally, don't worry about force blast being your only option at the end, because for two of those three clicks he also has CCE. All in all he reminds me of a very specific boy in blue from over in the DCU, but I think that was the point.

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=11976
That point gets driven home even more so by his 191 point experienced version. Both this and the veteran represent his more standard Squadron Supreme version, and as such get the Defenders team ability (anyone else smell an ATA?). This one is very similar to the rookie, with the very obvious loss of hypersonic. That's ok though, because he makes up for it in other ways, such as better combat values. Two clicks of running shot actually sandwich two of charge this time around, with force blast coming in afterwards. Super strength still has a strong showing (no pun intended), and he finally gets a slot of impervious to go with his other damage reducers. His damage track gets beefed up some, with an opening slot of leadership to help out his squadron mates. In the back half of his dial he also has a healthy combination of both CCE and RCE. With his 8 range that's not a bad package at all.

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=11977
And then there's the veteran. At 224 points, this guy is just mean. How mean? Well, let's see. His first two slots have impervious and hypersonic, to say nothing of an opening 11 attack and 5 damage. He just seems to get better from there. Sure he switches down to invulnerability, but he's also got the familiar combo of charge, super strength, and CCE, and his attack jumps up to 12. Force blast and RCE come in after that, and with his increased range (10) he can make even better use out of it. Toughness finally shows up after everything else is gone, but he's also got an ending slot of regeneration that has the possibility of putting him back up on a click with super strength, invulnerability, and RCE.

Not a bad set of figures, and someone who can definitely hold his own against the bruisers of DC.

And we have two new characters, but they share an REV: Aleta and Starhawk of the Guardians of the Galaxy!

Article:
http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/products.asp?cid=41068

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=11945
The rookie Aleta starts out at a modest 51 points with the Defenders team ability. More of a support character than anything else, she has a full dial of leap/climb (despite the fact her picture shows her as a flyer) for mobility, with two opening slots of telekinesis and three of barrier. As her combat values begin to sag, ES/D pops in for a couple of clicks to boost her defense, and she gets much more aggressive, with a final two slots of both RCE and pulse wave. Throw in an 8 range and she's got a fair shot at affecting whoever she wants.

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=11946
The experienced gets much better at 75 points and still the Defenders TA (It's what all of the Guardians will be getting). Barrier still makes a strong showing with four slots up front, while force blast now makes an appearance for three, and RCE shows up much sooner. In the back half of her dial she's both aggressive and helpful; with running shot, tk, and ES/D, while pulse wave shows up once again on her last slot. In this version her range also gets bumped up to 10, giving her much needed clearance when it comes to melee powerhouses.

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=12042
Starhawk, the veteran, is MUCH more powerful than Aleta, coming in at 144 points. For the most part a different set of powers, he starts out with average combat values that only get better around the middle of his dial , then drop off afterwards. When it comes to mobility, he's got a very good assortment, starting with running shot for two slots, moving into HSS, and then to phasing to get away in a hurry. Defensively he's no slouch either, with an opening 17 defense with ES/D, and the power sticks around for two more slots afterwards. Once that goes away he gets much tougher, with a couple clicks of invulnerability, and then he moves into willpower to continue hurting his opponents. He has three slots of RCE, but those clicks are split up and surround two clicks of support with a very good attack value, giving him better than even chances to help his teammates. Near the end of his dial he gets some probability control to confound his opponents. When it comes to attack, he's all about range, and mostly about hitting multiple people. He starts and ends with pulse wave, with a little bit of energy explosion at the front of his dial, and some psychic blast in the middle. Not to mention his 12 range...ouch.

That's it for today. Hope you enjoy.

And now for your enjoyment, the Mad Titan himself...Thanos!

Article

Figure Gallery
http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=12052
At 267 points with the Power Cosmic, this unique is an absolute beast...of course what would you expect from the guy who's in love with Death. The first click is enough to make anyone cower in fear: 9 move with phasing, 13 attack with psychich blast, 18 defense with impervious, and 4 damage with outwit. The craziness doesn't end there, as his attack value stays high--never dropping below 10--with psychic blast coming in and out of his dial. His defense also stays pretty high with a 15 being the lowest, and he has a full complement of damage reducers with a final two slots of regeneration. He's also fully stocked with damage powers, with the aforementioned opening outwit for four clicks, two more of probability control, and two more of close combat expert. Not to mention that the lowers his damage goes is 3 for only two slots out of his 10 click dial. Phasing also makes a return at the end of his dial just in case he does need to make a quick getaway. Throw in a 10 range and the Mad Titan will not disappoint.

Got a long review for you today, so strap yourselves in, this is gonna get interesting.

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=12019
First we have Power Princess of the Squadron Supreme. This 107 point unique with the Defenders TA is very reminiscent of a Wonder Woman type figure (which kind of fits considering Hyperion reminds us of a certain boy in blue). She starts off as a very typical brick, with charge for four clicks, super strength for six, and a single slot of invulnerability followed by four of toughness. Her starting attack and damage are also very competent, allowing for some big devastating hits early in the game. In the middle of her dial she gets two slots of close combat expert, as well as combat reflexes, encouraging you to put her in the middle of the action. She ends pretty strongly too, with three slots of flurry, two of battle fury, a bump in defense and a final slot of willpower. All in all a good addition to the team, and not too expensive for a powerhouse figure.

I also have a couple of LEs to share with you.

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=11960
First up is the Celestial Madonna, the LE for Mantis. This version of the character came to the forefront in the Avengers: Celestial Quest miniseries that is largely ignored by the masses. At 64 points she may not seem very threatening at first, but in my opinion that could be a costly mistake. Incap is a major feature on her dial, with two opening clicks and three at the end. No range may lower her in some people's eyes, but close combat incap can be just as devastating, especially as a set up for heavy hitting combos. She's no slouch in the movement category either. Two slots of leap/climb start it off, then she gets flurry for the two clicks where there's no incap, and then two of phasing after that. Her defense, while not that high, could prove frustrating to her opponents, with two clicks of super senses, four of combat reflexes (providing her highest defense on her third and fourth clicks olf 17 in melee) and a final click of regen. The big story for me is in the back half of her dial, where she has a whole four slots of support. Throw her into combat at first, but once she gets smacked around a little, move her to the backfield with her phasing to provide healing to the rest of your force. Her stats may not be anything special, but with the right planning her powers can be very effective for you.

http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=11994
Next is King Hyperion, the evil version of the Squadron bruiser that it took two other Hyperions and then some to take down. At only 187 points he may not seem like he'd be that powerful compared to the REV, but you're still getting a very good figure. His opening slot is huge, with both hypersonic speed and impervious along with a high attack (11) and damage (5). After that his dial gets even more interesting. His defense jumps up to 18, but then starts sliding from there; but is bolstered by two slots of invul and three more of toughness. He has a couple of vulnerable clicks but his final slot has regen, allowing him to get back in the game. His damage stays pretty constant at 3 for most of the dial, ending at 4. Two clicks in the middle however have exploit weakness, allowing for big damage, while the back half of his dial is filled with battle fury, negating his 8 range. That's ok though, considering at that point you won't want to use range, and I'll explain why in a moment. Flurry surrounds a couple clicks of charge, which all helps his mobility and offense. Speaking of offense, his attack turns out huge. After his opening click he gets two slots of psychic blast with a 10 attack followed by three of quake with a 9. Once that's gone his attack starts climbing so that by his last click he's got a 13, which begs the question: do you take the attack for 4 damage, or do u regen? This guy is the Marquee prize, so a lot of people will be clamoring for him.

They also released a whole lot of cards...as in all of the feats, battlefield conditions, and special objects; but I wont review those yet since I have to leave. Rest assured it will be done either later on tonight or tomorrow.

I know I'm behind in reviews. They posted all of the feats, battlefield conditions, and special objects, a couple more characters (including one you've been waiting for) and another LE. I have a performance today that I have to leave for in about 10 minutes, but I'm hoping to get them all done later today. So just be patient.
