Folks!

Brian is different from Bryan.

George is different from Jorge.  Geoff and Jeff are different names.

Diane and Diana are NOT interchangeable.  Nor are Cathy, Kathie and Kathy.

Vinny and Vinnie are different and Avie, Avy, Avi and Avey are different.

Steven, Stephen, Stephan, Stefan... all Not The Same Name.

Pay attention to how folks sign their name.  Pay attention to how folks who care spell other folks' names.  It's not that hard to pay enough attention and to show enough respect to get somebody's name right.

--Avie.  Not Avi, not Avy, not Avey, not Aviy, not Avee.

...with a rusty grapefruit spoon! (As soon as I decide where [and what] your dencc actually is!)

While I understand and agree with your point, there's no way to stop it. A lot of people, especially young ones (but not all) have short attention spans. Then you've got people who just plain don't pay attention to what goes on around them. I know, sad but true. BTW, I work as a proofreader and just turned 50.

Sure there's a way to stop it.  Teach people to pay attention to details at an early age.  I corrected 5 typos I made while typing this post - my typing skills are lousy, but my proofreading (and the fact that I care) count.

What it comes down to is just that - it shows you CARE.  When you misspell someone's name repeatedly, even after being corrected or handed the correct spelling, it shows you don't give a rat's ass about that person.
